http://www.zdnet.com/blog/btl/the-two-features-twitter-should-have-been-working-on/39593 Now that the new Twitter home page has rolled out to nearly everyone in the free world except for me and Chris Pirillo , I’d like to say a few words about it. I don’t like it. How can I dislike something I haven’t tried? Well, for the record, I have actually tried it. #NewTwitter rolled out to the TechRepublic Twitter account and I’ve tried it there.

Chirrps, the Twitter search utility, now lets you check in at your favorite websites

Back in June, we told you about Chirrps . At the time, I said it was not likely to become your next Twitter client, and that was exactly the plan. I still hold to that idea, and apparently so do many others. Chirrps has picked up considerable speed over the past few months. http://thenextweb.com/apps/2010/09/23/chirrps-the-twitter-search-utility-now-lets-you-check-in-at-your-favorite-websites/

Top 10 Ways to Annoy with Retweets | Garious Blog

Just this morning, my friend got @reply from one of his Twitter followers to stop the habit of retweeting other people’s tweets. The request was so hilarious he had to post it on his Facebook wall. I never knew retweeting can be offensive as it is like an act of spreading goodwill in the twittersphere. There’s so much that my friend needs to learn when it comes to twitter netiquette without getting burned for posting innocent retweets.
If you're trying to improve how far your Tweets get shared, try talking about Twitter itself in those 140 characters--it'll boost your chances according to some new analysis. But Facebookers seem to hate Twitter--its mention is a sharing killer. There're a million ways to investigate the social trends exhibited in the status streams from Twitter and Facebook, but Dan Zarella has been examining "meta mentions" on the two social networks--instances when the system's users mention the system itself as part of a status update or Tweet. His results are presented graphically above. If you mention Twitter during a Tweet, it pushes up your re-Tweet sharing chances by 300% over the average non-Twitter-mentioning one, and even mentioning Facebook boosts the sharing by over 60%. http://www.fastcompany.com/1566344/twitter-facebook-re-tweets-meta-mentioning-sharing-statuses

The line between book and Internet will disappear - O'Reilly Radar

http://radar.oreilly.com/2010/09/beyond-ebooks-publisher-as-api.html#039;Reilly+Radar) It should happen because a book properly hooked into the Internet is a far more valuable collection of information than a book not properly hooked into the Internet. And once something is "properly hooked into the internet," that something is part of the Internet. It will happen, because: what is a book, after all, but a collection of data (text + images), with a defined structure (chapters, headings, captions), meta data (title, author, ISBN), and prettied up with some presentation design? In other words, what is a book, but a website that happens to be written on paper and not connected to the web? An ebook is just a print book by another name
During the final phases of a project Internet Explorer (in this case 8...not the dreaded 6!) bit me on the behind. In fairness this was my fault: I should have checked earlier - I'd done a quick CSS check in IE6 and done some fixes but I hadn't checked the functionality.

Internet Explorer Input Type Image Issue - Web, Twitter, Social Networking & Foursquare Thoughts

http://www.joelhughes.com/scene-nomad The client (based in Cardiff) required a social networking site targeting the Gay & Lesbian sector. This website (unlike many competitors including the amazingly named Gaydar!) is not focussed so much on dating/relationship but is more about general events which are gay friendly - this obviously becomes more and more important when your not in a big city such as London. This site was very complex to develop, required a lot of specification work and, unsurprisingly, has a beast of database running behind it.

Do You Convert an Oops! Moment into an Opportunity to Build Trust? by @ScepticGeek

What do you do when you make an embarrassing mistake on the social web? I have been seeing different behaviors and wanted to pen my thoughts on how your behavior affects the trust others place in you. Yesterday, a well-known person in the tech world tweeted a screenshot about what she thought was a new feature in Gmail. After I pointed out that it probably wasn’t a new feature at all, she simply deleted her tweet. At the same time, a tech blog picked up her tweet and wrote a blog post describing this ‘new’ Gmail feature. http://www.skepticgeek.com/socialweb/do-you-convert-an-oops-moment-into-an-opportunity-to-build-trust/

Twitter Is Not Your Inbox - Web, Twitter, Social Networking & Foursquare Thoughts

The normal tweets from folks you follow is NOT an inbox. They are NOT expecting a reply or a response from every single public tweet they make. You don't read everyone - you dip in an out - we all have different amounts of time to spend on social media. There is no minimum/maximum amount! ....However (there's always a catch isn't there?) People DO expect answers to tweets sent directly to you - whether as a @reply (or perhaps 'mention') or as direct message (DM).

Foursquare courts the rest of us | The Social - CNET News

Yesterday morning, thousands of New York-based users of geolocation service Foursquare received a "check-in" that had nothing to do with a friend announcing her presence at a Starbucks or a co-worker logging a breakfast meeting in midtown: It was a news alert from The Wall Street Journal, informing them that Metro-North commuter rail service was suspended due to a fire on a bridge over the Harlem River. If you were, say, a Philadelphia-based Foursquare user who "followed" The Wall Street Journal account, you wouldn't have received the alert. Nor would it have shown up on the screen of your smartphone, if you were a New Yorker who had recently checked in out of town.
Beleagured oil company BP has launched a search for a new head of global communications in an effort to restore its tarnished reputation after the massive oil spill from its Macondo oil well in the Gulf of Mexico. The company, which came under severe criticism for the way it handled the media during the five-month long crisis, has recruited City headhunters to fill the role, which could result in the successful candidate sitting on its influential management committee. The process is not expected to result in the removal of Andrew Gowers, the former editor of Financial Times , who is currently BP's head of media relations. Mr Gowers is likely to report to the new communications chief. BP declined to comment on Tuesday night.

LinkedIn Buys ChoiceVendor: ‘Yelp for B2B’

LinkedIn announced that it had acquired ChoiceVendor , a small-business oriented vendor review site. This is how founder-CEO Yan-David Erlich described it at launch back in September of 2009: “a website that helps business professionals find and manage their vendors—anything from payroll to IT to catering.” He also wrote about the future of recommendations in a July, 2010 piece in Forbes in which he said the following about ChoiceVendor: ChoiceVendor , the business-to-business review site I founded, displays the role and industry of the reviewer to help business decision-makers find reviews written by people who hold roles similar or relevant to their own. We also reserve the right to request invoices for services provided to create an additional level of guarantee that the reviewer has actually done business with the vendor he or she is reviewing. Erlich spent a fair amount of time thinking about the local segment and trying to find an angle.

co-ordinator. But a round of budget cuts forced him to take on extra duties – and a few weeks ago, he returned to the classroom to teach an algebra course to 9th and 10th graders (14 and 15 year-olds). However, instead of lecturing about polynomials and exponents during class time – and then giving his young charges 30 problems to work on at home – Fisch has flipped the sequence. He’s recorded his lectures on video and uploaded them to YouTube for his 28 students to watch at home. Then, in class, he works with students as they solve problems and experiment with the concepts.
