http://www.reddit.com/r/Guitar/comments/kc2i2/how_do_you_write_a_solo/ I play in a metal band and am lead guitar. I have no trouble running around the neck at speeds and can play a lot of Yngwie/Syu/Jani Liimatainen sort of shred without any trouble. The trouble I'm having is that I can't write a solo for shit. I heard that you're supposed to think about what chords are being played and then build around that but does anyone actually do that? Do you stick to scales or have a more free way of doing it?
