Revenue declines were spread across all the major newspaper ad categories. National advertising fell 10.4% from $823 million to $738 million, retail was down 6% from $2.8 billion to $2.64 billion, and classifieds slipped 4.8% from $1.2 billion to $1.14 billion. As in previous quarters, online ad revenues posted modest growth with a 3.6% increase from $733 million to $759 million. Saving money is important. The job market isn't very promising. Much of Generation Z, or those roughly ages 13 to 22, show a high understanding of those financial and economical truths in a survey out Wednesday on the financial habits and concerns of Gen Z and their parents by TD Ameritrade. Both Gen Z and their parents listed jobs and unemployment first when asked to identify their biggest concerns about the economy, mentioned by roughly a quarter of both groups.

"They are doing a nice job understanding the challenges they may face," says Carrie Braxdale, managing director of investor services at TD Ameritrade, adding, "It was impressive and surprising to see how well aware they are around the importance of money. The research, conducted by On Device Research, involved asking a group of 260 mobile users to keep track of their m-commerce activity for a week (via their handsets) and then complete a follow-up survey about their activities and attitudes toward mobile shopping and advertising. Survey participants owned either a smartphone or a feature phone and were demographically representative of the U.S. population. Each was paid $10 to take part. Mobile advertising was the second-most-common factor prompting m-commerce activity (22%) after citing mobile as “the easiest way” to do things (24%) like find product information or a store location, buying physical or digital goods or checking status on an auction site.

Aereo wins partial victory in broadcasters' suit. Aereo, a startup that takes live TV broadcasts and sends them to mobile devices in New York for a monthly fee, has won a partial victory in court over the media companies that are suing it.

U.S. District Court Judge Alison Nathan in New York dismissed one of three claims made by a group of broadcast companies, including News Corp.'s Fox, PBS and others in a ruling released Monday. Nathan dismissed the claim of unfair competition, saying it was pre-empted by the Copyright Act. Two claims of copyright infringement remain in the Fox-led suit as does a separate copyright lawsuit that includes ABC, CBS and NBC as plaintiffs. The broadcasters have argued that Aereo is copying and retransmitting their programming over the Internet unlawfully. An Aereo spokeswoman declined to comment.
