The Muslim Brotherhood Will Stand Up for All Egyptians. By Ibrahim El Houdaiby Published September 26, 2007, issue of September 28, 2007. Reading Mona Eltahawy’s September 21 opinion article, I felt more than ever that all Egyptians — regardless of their ideological orientation, gender or age — have a lot in common (“I Will Stand Up for the Muslim Brotherhood”). Eltahawy and I differ on much, yet we share a common objective and we struggle for the same cause of bringing real democracy, justice and freedom to Egypt.

Eltahawy is critical of the Muslim Brotherhood’s political orientation and stances on a number of issues, yet she stands with us in solidarity against the Egyptian government’s crackdowns. Nor is that the only point on which we agree. In her opinion article, Eltahawy criticizes the Muslim Brotherhood’s leader, Mohammed Mahdi Akef, for calling her “naked” because she was wearing a short-sleeved T-shirt and pants. Not wearing the hijab, or headscarf, makes a woman unveiled, not naked. Don't fear the Islamists - Opinion. Don't fear the Islamists Recent demonstrations by Salafists reflect fears about threats to Egypt's Islamic identity. The solution is not to isolate Islamists but to integrate them into Egypt's new political space Ibrahim El-Houdaiby , Monday 8 Aug 2011 Fear of the Islamists' rise reappeared after the predominantly Islamist demonstrations on July 29.

Scenes of Islamists - mainly Salafists- carrying pro-sharia (Islamic law) banners and chanting, "Egypt will remain Islamic" have raised concerns from different groups both inside and outside the country. While some of these concerns are valid, they are largely exaggerated, and the significance of the demonstration has been over-estimated. The July 29 demonstrations were supposed to be the finale of a three-week sit-in that started on July 8. Islamist groups responded differently to the perceived identity threat. The scene in the square on July 29 was an overstatement of Salafists' popularity. Short link: MB: In Their Own Words. Vol. 10, No. 27 February 6, 2011 The Muslim Brotherhood has taken a greater role in organizing the protest against the Egyptian regime as it unfolds its independent political agenda.

Rashad al-Bayumi, the Brotherhood’s second-in-command, announced in an interview with Japanese TV that the group would join a transitional government in order to cancel the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel, as it “offends the Arabs’ dignity and destroys the interests of Egypt and other Arab states.” He further stressed that Egypt does not need American aid.The Muslim Brotherhood does indeed participate in political activity and defend the democratic process.

Muslim Brotherhood to Join a Transitional Government The Muslim Brotherhood, a global movement with Hamas as its Palestinian branch, has taken a greater role in organizing the protest against the Egyptian regime as it unfolds its independent political agenda, defying both the American administration and Israel. Yousuf Nada: Anyone Can Run for President in Egypt. Muhammad Zoghbi: liberation of Al-Azhar. Following are excerpts from an address delivered by Egyptian cleric Muhammad Zoghbi, which aired on Azhari TV on February 15, 2011. Muhammad Zoghbi: Al-Azhar was subjected to a dangerous scheme, which was intended to shatter it and bring it down. This scheme consisted of three aspects: First, the politicization of the positions of the Sheik of Al-Azhar and the Mufti of Egypt, as well as the position of the Minister of Religious Endowments. These positions must be filled through elections. By no means should these officials be appointed by the president. Why? Because this politicization has led the people to lose their trust in Al-Azhar and its sheiks.

Therefore I say to the "sons" of Al-Azhar: Let us all join the campaign, led by Sheik Khaled Al-Gindi, until we liberate Al-Azhar, just like Egypt was liberated. Therefore, I say to the Sheik of Al-Azhar: You should be above all this. General Shura Council. Mohammed Mahdi Akef. Mohammed Mahdi Akef (Arabic: محمد مهدى عاكف) (born July 12, 1928) was the head of the Muslim Brotherhood, an Egypt-based Islamic political movement, from 2004 until 2010.

He assumed the post, that of "general guide" (Arabic: مرشد العام) (frequently translated as "chairman") upon the death of his predecessor, Ma'mun al-Hudaybi. Akef was arrested on 4 July 2013.[1] On 14 July 2013 Egypt's new prosecutor general Hisham Barakat ordered his assets to be frozen.[2] Life and career[edit] Akef was born in 1928 in Kafr Awad Al Seneita –Aga - Dakahliya Province, in the north of Egypt. Akef obtained his Primary Certificate of Education at Al Mansoura Primary School, and obtained his Secondary Certificate of Education at Cairo- Fuad 1st Secondary School. He first became involved with the Muslim Brotherhood in 1940, which was then led by Hassan al Banna. The last Sections he headed in the Muslim Brotherhood before 1954 were both the Students Section and the PE Section at the Groups HQ. Opinion By Mona Eltahawy Published September 19, 2007, issue of September 21, 2007. The first time I went to interview the Muslim Brotherhood, in 1995, an officer manager at their headquarters on the Nile opened the door with one hand and gave me a headscarf to wear with the other.

The second time I went to interview the Muslim Brotherhood, in 2005, no headscarf awaited me. I was intrigued. I had been living in the United States since 2000, but had heard during visits to Egypt that the Brotherhood, or Al-Ikhwan as they’re known in Arabic, were changing. They’d become fluent in the lingo of reform and democracy. Was this new Brotherhood for real? The Muslim Brotherhood’s leader, Supreme Guide Mohammed Mahdi Akef, started our meeting two years ago by saying all the right things about rejecting violence and choosing instead to take part in elections and other “peaceful ways of bringing about change.” I was wearing a short-sleeved t-shirt and pants. “I am not naked,” I reminded him. ‘Akif Attacks the Report of the American Freedoms Commission | Aug 2004.

The arrogance of American power around Sudan | Aug 2004. Muhammad Badie. General positions. An Overview of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood's Stance on U.S. and Jihad; Translation of Its Draft Political Platform.

This report presents an overview of the positions of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood, as expressed by its general guide, Muhammad Badi', since his nomination in January 2010, and as set out in its proposed political platform, which was drafted in the era of Badi's predecessor, Muhammad Mahdi 'Akef, and was leaked to the media in August 2007. The translations are taken from reports published by MEMRI over recent years.[1] Badi': The U.S. Is on the Verge of Collapse In the same sermon, Badi' said that the Muslims would soon emerge victorious over their enemies, as promised by Allah in the Koran: "Allah said: 'The hosts will all be routed and will turn and flee [Koran 54:45].' This verse is a promise to the believers that they shall defeat their enemies, and [that the enemies] shall withdraw.

The... Oppression and Tyranny no longer tolerated in Egypt. “Oppression and tyranny no longer have a presence in Egypt following the fall of Mubarak's regime”, Dr. Mohamed Badie told female Brotherhood students at Beni Suef, south of Cairo, on Monday, adding “people's justice, peace and stability will prevail at post-January 25 revolution”. The Muslim Brotherhood chairman invited Christians to join the new Freedom and Justice Party, the Brotherhood intends to establish. Badie said his invitation is intended to be a reassuring message for Egypt's Copts explaining that the new party will not be a preaching entity; he added that it will organize sports and artistic activities, as well as support the establishment of economic institutions, hospitals and schools.

With regards to the state-owned media's attempts to link the group's stances with perceptions of other Islamists, Badie said Egypt's Salafi movement with its multiple approaches, from the extreme right to extreme left is tainted by some errors. Did he not care about the fatwa of the ulema [scholars] of the Muslims, 'Jihad of self and money to recover al-Aqsa is a duty on every Muslim? '" asked Mohamed Badie, General Guide of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood, in a June 14 speech.

The speech from the Brotherhood's Ikhwan Online website is evidence that the group has not moderated its position even an iota, despite assurances to Western audiences. "How happy would be the Muslims if all Muslim rulers made the Palestinian cause a pivotal issue, around which Muslims, rulers and the ruled, would line up," he stated. "The Lord of Glory has threatened these murdering Zionists criminals with a penalty of a kind which operates in this world before the hereafter, he said, before referencing a Quranic quote calling Jews "apes, despised.

" “The Muslim Brotherhood Past, Present, And Future” General Guidance Office. The Brotherhood’s Reform Initiative—A Reading of the Realities and the Implications | March 2004. 31th May 2010. What are the Brotherhood’s priorities regarding political participation, particularly after the election of the new Guidance Council, which many had expected to focus more on internal organization?

I think that what happened was the complete opposite of that was expected, for a number of reasons. We remained involved in national and pan-Arab issues, particularly the Palestine question, the threat to al-Aqsa, and the Gaza siege. We participated in the Shura Council midterm elections, with the same number of candidates we put forth in the last People’s Assembly elections.

We continued our coordination with a number of political forces, opening up to them, visiting them and supporting some of their candidates in the Shura Council midterm elections. This is evidence that some observers write hastily, without accurate information. How will voter turnout affect the Brotherhood’s chances in the People’s Assembly elections? However, the electoral platform is already present. عربي. The Muslim Brotherhood and reform in Egypt (08.04.2004)

Hanging with the Muslim Brotherhood. I just met with a high-ranking member of the Muslim Brotherhood in Cairo while large ongoing demonstrations against Egypt’s ruling military junta continue 24 hours a day in Tahrir Square downtown. Every political party in the country is at that square right now except the Muslim Brotherhood. If you want to meet with them, you have to take a taxi down to their headquarters.

My friend, colleague, and traveling companion Armin Rosen is with me. He and I have spoken to liberals, socialists, small-l libertarians, intellectuals, human rights activists, moderate establishment figures, professors, local journalists, Egyptian foreign policy experts, and a bunch of random people. The range of political opinion right now in Egypt is much wider than it was before. The January revolution really broke this place open. It’s physically and culturally the same country I visited before, but it’s politically unrecognizable as the Egypt I knew. Muslim Brotherhood executive bureau member Esam El-Erian. Rashad al-Bayoumi.
