How to Play Take the A Train for Jazz Guitar

The premise for this series is that we will take a jazz standard, analyze the harmonic material, and then dig into using the tune itself for the basis of improvisation, comping or chord melody, focusing on one specific idea for each tune. The first tune we’ll look at is the classic standard “Take the A Train.” This tune is not only easy to learn, but it allows us to dig into using the melody line of a tune as the basis for our improvisational material. In the following article we’ll take a look at the Roman numeral analysis of each chord, we’ll break down the melody line and see how we can use it to form the basis of our solos and learn a few new improvisational concepts along the way, and finally check out which scales we can throw in to spice things up over each chord.

Two rules to remember: #1:Play each phrase of the melody in position. Playing “in position” means that you need to assign each finger to it’s own fret space. For example, our first phrase (leading to a Cm7 chord) has notes spanning from the 7th fret to the 10th fret. . #2: The last note of each melody phrase must be played with the finger that is found in the following chord. The last note of each phrase is (almost always) the highest note of the chord to follow–play it with the finger that would normally be used in the upcoming chord.
