Social Planning, Food Policy, A City of Gardens

http://vancouver.ca/people-programs/community-gardens.aspx If you are not able to grow your own vegetables at home, joining a community garden is an excellent way for you to benefit from locally grown food. But community gardens are not just places to grow healthy vegetables. Studies show that community gardens also promote community building, reduce crime, and more.

Urban Agriculture in Vancouver City Farm Boy has been farming in Vancouver since 2006, starting with only two gardens, the urban farm quickly grew to 14+ gardens including a large rooftop garden in downtown Vancouver. In 2007 all the veggies were sold thru the local farmers markets. In 2008 the Community Supported Agriculture model was adopted and a few garden shares were offered. The Farmers Markets were also regularly attended. The year was a challenge with alot of cold, wet weather, but the spinach, and other salad greens loved it. http://www.cityfarmboy.com/index-4.html

Food Scraps Recycling

http://vancouver.ca/streets-transportation/reducing-cars-on-city-streets.aspx VIVA Vancouver is about creatively transforming streets into vibrant public spaces. During the summer, the City closes roads to vehicle traffic in collaboration with local businesses, regional partners, and community groups, and converts them into public spaces for walking, lounging, and lunching. VIVA Vancouver enhances the city's sense of community, encourages active forms of transportation, and benefits local businesses.

Viva Vancouver - Engineering Services, City of Vancouver

This is a story about food, land and money and how a healthy dose of civil disobedience could help create a new green economy in Vancouver. The city is no stranger to green ideas. The stage was set by local environmentalism in the late 1960s, which launched Greenpeace and the David Suzuki Foundation, among others. The 1990s brought the ecological footprint , a brilliant bit of land use research supervised by UBC’s Bill Rees. Some eight years ago, a pair of Vancouver writers carried out a wildly popular lifestyle experiment known as the 100 Mile Diet , a book that added to modern literary conversations about food, in the vein of Marion Nestle and Michael Pollan . Today, the City of Vancouver is chipping away at its ambitious Greenest City 2020 plan, which includes food security as one of the pillars to hold up a green economy and a sustainable future.

When I think about sustainability, I don’t immediately think of police departments. My background is sustainability planning and I have worked for regional and municipal government as well as for the non-profit sector. Before this summer, I had never encountered or heard of sustainability initiatives in police departments. In general, my contact with the police has been minimal.
