La création de l’école, projet préalablement initié par ses trois membres fondateurs, est intégrée en janvier 2015 dans le rapport de Lyne Cohen-Solal sur la filière mode en France, qui pointait du doigt l’absence et le manque flagrants d'une grande école de mode publique : la voici l'Ecole Nationale de Mode et Matière-Paris Fashion School by PSL ! La Ministre de la Culture, madame Audrey Azoulay, confirmait le 4 octobre 2016 dans le Journal du Textile, le lancement de l’école. Le 26 octobre 2016, l’Ecole Nationale de Mode et Matière - Paris Fashion School by PSL a ouvert ses portes pour une première année de préfiguration avec une vingtaine d’étudiants issus des trois établissements co-fondateurs.
