Human use of computers is a major focus of the field of HCI Human–computer Interaction ( HCI ) involves the study, planning, and design of the interaction between people ( users ) and computers.

Human–computer interaction

It is often regarded as the intersection of computer science , behavioral sciences , design and several other fields of study . The term was popularized by Card, Moran, and Newell in their seminal 1983 book, "The Psychology of Human-Computer Interaction", although the authors first used the term in 1980, [ 1 ] and the first known use was in 1975. [ 2 ] The term connotes that, unlike other tools with only limited uses (such as a hammer, useful for driving nails, but not much else), a computer has many affordances for use and this takes place in an open-ended dialog between the user and the computer.

Because human–computer interaction studies a human and a machine in conjunction, it draws from supporting knowledge on both the machine and the human side. Goals Differences with related fields 1. 2. 3. Www.bracil.net/Teaching/HCI/Notes/Tsang-HCI-005.pdf.

80+ Inspiring Quotes about Design

Design is a plan for arranging elements in such a way as best to accomplish a particular purpose. — Charles Eames Everything is designed. Few things are designed well. — Brian Reed There is no design without discipline. €” Massimo Vignelli People ignore design that ignores people. — Frank Chimero I’ve always held to the belief that the practice of creating compelling graphic design occurs not by employing the principals of a democracy, but rather, that of a monarchy. — Thomas Vasquez Good design is obvious.

€” Joe Sparano Every designers’ dirty little secret is that they copy other designers’ work. €” Aaron Russell The most innovative designers consciously reject the standard option box and cultivate an appetite for thinking wrong. — Marty Neumeier Visual design is often the polar opposite of engineering: trading hard edges for subjective decisions based on gut feelings and personal experiences. Usability for Handheld Devices Versus Computers

Many people now use different mobile devices—including smartphones, digital cameras, MP3 players, eReaders, and GPSs (Global Positioning System)—in particular contexts. How are users interacting with these devices when they are away from their computers? How does the design of a device—including the controls its hardware provides, its interaction models, and its form factor—determine the design and usability of the software applications that run on it?

“The only important thing about design is how it relates to people.” As companies progressively introduce more advanced technology in their consumer electronics products, handheld devices are taking up more and more of people’s time in their everyday lives.
