Hospital Wayfinding – Indoor Wayfinding Software. First, let’s bust a couple of myths surrounding the Digital Wayfinding Application cost (with your permission, Adam and Jamie). It is expensive to Create a Digital Wayfinding System… Not True. A one-building hospital can have a Digital Wayfinding System for around US$25k. That includes a Wayfinding Application on a Kiosk and a Way [...]
One of the questions I frequently receive : What is the best way to display the Digital Wayfinding Application? On a Kiosk, the Web or on a Mobile Phone? This is indeed a very good question because everyone wants the investment to pay off. [A question from one of my respected readers] Dear Ron, Sorry to bother you again but I found something very interesting on your site with regards to “on campus mobile wayfinding used for smart phones, for indoor and outdoor usage” would you able to be more specific and maybe even give me the name of the application used. MedTouch provides strategic planning and execution of mobile solutions for healthcare clients. Whether responsive design, mobile sub-sites, or mobile applications, MedTouch will work with you to extend the reach of your content to other devices.
Responsive Design This year will see more mobile devices -- phones and tablets -- connected to the Internet. The best way to address the explosion of device sizes and types is through responsive design: designing the site on a fluid grid with specific breakpoints. MedTouch has developed a number of websites utilizing responsive design, allowing the entire site, including modules, to respond dynamically to display on a browser, tablet and mobile phones. Here are some recent examples: Mobile Subsites For some clients, mobile subsites are the correct solution.

The 10 Greatest Medical Inventions of the Last 50 Years. Heal Your Heart; Heal Your Life. We are all familiar with saying such as “Slow down or you’ll have a heart attack,” or “He died of a broken heart.”
Well, it turns out there is some truth in these metaphors. Scientists are now finding out that chronic stress can literally break your heart, while compassion and mindful breathing may help to heal it. Stephen Porges, a psychophysiologist and Professor at the University of Illonois at Chicago has proposed a Polyvagal Theory that ties our unconscious perceptions of threat and safety to heart rate rhythm and the ability to regulate physiological arousal. This theory proposes that the vagus nerve communicates between the brain and the heart and affects human response to threat as well as social engagement and bonding. According to Porges, our response systems to threat exist in a layered hierarchy that is functional for survival. The middle layer is a more sophisticated vagal system, unique to mammals. {*style:<b> A smooth heart rhythm can extend life How Do We Heal the Heart? The Veterans Health Administration (VA) has tapped DSHI Systems to create a tablet-based mobile triage system for the emergency room that determines how urgently a patients needs to be seen by a physician. The application, called ER Mobile, will help emergency room nurses better identify the sickest patients so that they can be cared for first.
The app also aims to improve workflow efficiency for care providers since it automates some documentations and speeds up the process of determining which patients need cardiac monitors, CT scans, x-rays, blood tests, or other diagnostic tests. The idea for ER Mobile came out of the VA Employee Innovation Competition, which generated 6,500 ideas, but only about two dozen were chose for further investigation. DSHI plans to complete its first prototype of the ER Mobile app by August of this year. DSHI is working with Document Storage Systems (DSS) to create the offering. More on the ER Mobile prototype in the press release below: Mini-Med Health Plans Useless to Consumers. <br/><a href=" US News</a> | <a href=" Business News</a> Copy Consumer Reports is warning against so-called "mini-med" health plans that offer limited protection, usually at lower cost, but with sky-high deductibles that can leave the insured paying thousands out of pocket.
Mini-med health plans tend to appeal to industries such as retail, temporary staffing agencies and food service, according to the consumer group. The employers want to show that they have something extra to offer their staff, but, in reality, the plans offer little to no coverage, said report author Nancy Metcalf, senior program editor at Consumer Reports who writes the "Ask Nancy" blog about health insurance. "There is this persistent dream of consumers that, if they only look hard enough, they'll find really good insurance that costs a lot less," said Metcalf. Of course, Metcalf said that this is a last resort. In Small California Hospitals, the Marketing of Back Surgery. To Seriously Improve Global Health, Reinvent the Toilet.
The toilet is a magnificent thing. Invented at the turn of the 19th century, the flush version has vastly improved human life. The toilet has been credited with adding a decade to our longevity. The sanitation system to which it is attached was voted the greatest medical advance in 150 years by readers of the British Medical Journal. Unfortunately it is an impractical luxury for about two- thirds of the world’s 7 billion people because it relies on connections to water and sewerage systems that must be built and maintained at great expense. The result is illness and early death.
Vaccines and medicines against these diseases help. Doing so requires reimagining the toilet. Among the designs being developed by eight university teams funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation are several that divert and capture urine, from which water can be recovered. For gridless sanitation to be economical, commerce needs to flourish around the collection and treatment of excrement. Visualizing Health And Well-Being Around The World. Attitudes towards health and well-being differ widely across the planet. Americans have a tendency to downplay the importance of community compared to other countries.
Other countries (like Japan) also place a higher importance on the ways that having a good job impacts health. Philips recently undertook the massive project of quantifying theses attitudes in a report (PDF) based on survey results of almost 40,000 people across 31 countries. There is a comprehensive analysis of the results, of course, but Philips also laid out the data in a handy visualization. Other survey questions are easier to visualize. New Yorkers are also, of course, some of the most stressed city denizens around the world, with 21% of residents reporting that they’re very stressed. There is some good news on a global scale: 87% are satisfied by relationships with family and friends, and 80% are satisfied with the health of their families. Clearly, companies like Philips have their work cut out for them.
Rural health, primary care and the importance of workforce | Occupy Healthcare. According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ; 2011), in 2010, there were approximately 209,000 practicing primary care physicians in the United States. AHRQ reported that of the 624,434 physicians delivering direct patient care only less than one-third are working in primary care.
When one considers that approximately 52% of the time Americans made an office-based medical visit it was to primary care, it becomes easy to understand why the desperate need to increase the primary care workforce is a top priority in healthcare. There are simply not enough primary care physicians to meet the needs of the American public. As the largest platform of healthcare delivery, primary care is an essential cornerstone of U.S. healthcare (and as seen below). However, when we begin discussing the importance of primary care and the primary care workforce, it becomes apparent that there are certain disparities in where providers practice (rural vs. urban). Literacy, Cognitive Function, and Health: R... [J Gen Intern Med. 2012. Patients directed to online tools don't necessarily use them :: Feb. 15, 2012. Even as patient reliance on the Internet for health information grows, physicians might want to hold on to their patient education pamphlets.
Researchers from the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia compared the efficacy of paper-based colorectal screening intervention information to Web-based intervention material. The study showed that 42% of patients given paper-based resources reviewed them, while only 24.6% of patients given access to Web-based information reviewed it. The study was published online Jan. 4 in the Journal of Health Communication (link). From June 2006 to August 2009, 391 women older than 50 seen for routine obstetrics/gynecology follow-up were given information on colorectal cancer intervention. Of those, 130 were given log-in information to a website that provided colorectal cancer screening information. Other women were sent the same information in printed form through the mail. All the women lived in rural Pennsylvania.
