To help people use the Google Docs editors when signed in to multiple accounts in an upcoming release, we are changing the structure of Docs editor URLs to no longer use the format /a/DOMAIN for Google Apps customers and to instead use a format containing /u/. All current URLs will continue to work after this change. If you click on an old URL, you will be redirected to the new structure that removes /a/DOMAIN without having to do any additional work. Note that users may still see /a/DOMAIN included in Docs editor URLs for an approximately one week-long transition period after this launch.

Why are we making this change? Currently, when people are signed-in to multiple Google accounts and open a Docs editor file, they may be asked to select which account to use to open the file. In the future, the change will also enable us to lift the one account per domain restriction currently imposed while using the Docs editors. At Google I/O last June, we introduced material design, a single underlying design system that allows for a beautiful unified experience across platforms and device sizes.

You’ve seen these design principles applied to many of Google’s productsrecently, and today we’re announcing that the Admin console is next in line. The Admin console has been redesigned to better meet the needs of Google Apps admins, putting your most important controls front and center and making the most common tasks easier than ever to complete. To help you get acquainted with the new design, we’ve prepared a design change guide [pdf], featuring screenshots of the new navigational elements and guidance on how to change settings, manage and add users, apply filters and access other frequently used features in the new UI. We also pulled together before and after screenshots for context on how things will be changing. For more information: Thinglink for Google Drive. Google Apps Update Alert!

Posted by Jorge Lugo, Software Engineer, Classroom (Cross-posted on the Google for Work Blog) While it’s a new year on the calendar, many teachers and students are just midway through the school year. They’ve clearly been hard at work, turning in more than 30 million assignments with Classroom since it launched six months ago.

If those assignments had been on paper instead of Google Docs, they would stretch from New York to Los Angeles when laid end to end. If every assignment had taken just one minute to print out, Classroom saved 57 years that would have otherwise been spent waiting for the printer. Today we’re launching a native Classroom mobile app for both Android and iOS (also available in Google Play for Education) to help teachers and students connect from wherever they are, and save even more paper and time. With the mobile app, students and teachers can: Archive Classes We also know that classes don’t go on forever.

How to Flip it with Google! I created a flipped lesson on moving a webpage from Expressions Web to a Google Site. I used Google Slides, an instructional video, and a Google Form for an exit ticket. First, I created the instructional video for reference. The video is about 3 minutes long and explains the process on moving a webpage from Expressions Web into a Google Site. Once it was completed, I uploaded the video to my YouTube channel. Next, I created a presentation using Google Slides to teach the lesson. Finally, I created an exit ticket using a Google Form. 4 Reasons For The Rise of Chromebook. Google’s Chromebook laptops have become more popular in the classroom than Apple’s iPad. IDC reported third quarter Chromebook sales of 715,000 versus Apple’s 702,000 iPads. There are four reasons that 2014 was the year of the Chromebook. First is that they are really cheap. The web appliances have most of the features of a laptop but without expensive memory of laptops. You can buy a Chromebook for as little as $199. The second reason for the emergence of the Chromebook is easy management.

The third reason for the rise of Chromebooks is Google Apps for Education, free cloud-based email, storage, collaborative documents and presentations, all in a cloud-based system. The fourth reason Chromebooks have become popular is that they have the instant on function and battery life of a tablet with nearly all of the functionality of a laptop. For all these reasons, NYC DOE added Chromebooks to the list of approved devices in November.
