Team Meat (Super Meat Boy!) - How do I get started programming games???

I poured my brain into an email to her about my theories on AI development, how machines can be programmed to recognize environments, how emotions can be learned through experience, etc. I spent a good 4 hours writing the email because I felt a connection to this professor’s work. It was an exciting email to write because it was something I was very interested in and I wanted to reach out and talk to someone about it.

There was so much hope while I was writing it that maybe I would get a response back and I would have someone to talk to about this kind of stuff, maybe get me started on the path to creating advanced machine AI. Sadly, I never heard back from her…I don’t even know if she read the email. Lately, because of Indie Game: The Movie and Super Meat Boy, I get several emails/twitter mentions/formspring questions a day from people wanting advice. The time working on Goo! You can find it here: It's a new year and wouldn't it be fitting that I find this organization One Game A Month only 2 hours before midnight on new years eve. It's essentially a call to arms for game developers everywhere to try and finish a game every month and share the process and progress with each other.I've always looked for great motivation to actually sit down and make some games and I think this may be it (I mean, it motivated me to build this site). If you follow me on twitter, or talk to me about video games, chances are you’ve heard me talk a lot about Proteus over the last year or so. Proteus is a game about exploring an island. Proteus doesn’t have most of the goals or objectives many players expect from games, but I find it to be a wonderful game to play. It’s a game I come back to over and over, because it reminds me of exploring the country as a child. I talked about this in more detail in the Ignite Guelph talk I gave on art and games. A few months ago I sat down to write down some thoughts on Proteus.

And so, without further ado, here are my thoughts on Proteus: I am 12 years old. It’s hot today. I look ahead to the line of trees in the distance. A flying grasshopper bursts out of the grass in front of me and its loud buzz startles me. I clamber up the pile of rocks – a pile left over from when this land was first cleared – to take stock of where I am. Soragora.
