What’s Really Wrong with Detroit Public Schools

Learn about the internal conflict and dynamics that threaten the students' future. Detroit Public Schools’ students recently won the award of the worst math scores in the National Assessment of Educational Progress’ 40-year history. Couple the disheartening standardized test scores with the nation’s lowest graduation rate, according to NPR, and you have a public school system that has utterly failed its students. To further complicate the issue, Detroit Public schools are currently fighting an internal battle with Emergency Finance Manager Robert Bobb. Detroit public school teachers, administrators, parents, and school board members are upset about Bobb’s recently issued directive, outlining that all students in the district take an additional standardized test this year. Judah was bright, but had begun calling himself stupid. The chaos of Detroit’s precarious education landscape had forced him to switch schools every few months, leaving him further and further behind. There was no central system to transfer Judah’s records when he moved, and according to Heard the school where he started the 2014-15 academic year had a single teacher assigned to 44 third-graders. Take it from Detroit Public Schools (DHS) Emergency Manager Darnell Earley and get yourself a snitch sheet so those you lord over can report their co-workers to you. That’s what Earley’s begun implementing at DHS in order to quash the sick-outs teachers have been waging on the regular in order to draw attention to the deplorable state of the district’s schools under Gov. Rick Snyder’s emergency management systems. In a largely uncirculated memo, remind the peons beneath you that strikes and protests are against the rules, then subtly slip the new rules mandating you turn on your peers in there, just like Earley did Jan. 14 of this year. Put it out on the sly so no one notices it until stumbling on it nearly two weeks later, as Earley did a short two days after an enormous sick-out that closed over half the district’s schools.

Obama's America Will Become Detroit. President Barack Obama travelled to Michigan this week and made his case for class war in defense of the welfare state. We need to take more money from the rich, he said, or schools will not be able to afford books, students will not be able to afford college, and disabled children will not get health care.

"Our economic success has never come from the top down," said Obama.
