Young's latest album, Chrome Dreams II, will be released next week. Neil Young 101: Raised in rural Ontario and suburban Winnipeg, Neil Young played in various small-time rock bands—idolizing The Guess Who's Randy Bachman and befriending future stars Joni Mitchell and Rick James along the way—before moving to Los Angeles in 1966. Within a year, he was a star himself: His band Buffalo Springfield was riding on the massive success of the anthemic "For What It's Worth," in spite of much internecine tension.
