The Solar Pocket Factory takes 15 seconds to print out a solar panel. The Solar Pocket Factory is the brainchild of Alex Hornstein and Shawn Frayne who are hoping to change the small scale solar panel business.
They developed the photovoltaic panel printer in their backyard and have had it on Kickstarter raising funds for their device that is able to print out a solar panel every 15 seconds. [Image Courtesy of The Solar Pocket Factory] The pair has made just about everything solar and they found out that the micro solar panels that they used to power up their devices were expensive, while being made poorly and they were brittle. What makes the majority of panels expensive was the assembly and found that around 15% of panels had flaws and materials often disintegrated within a few years. The pair decided that if they could automate production of the panels around 25% of the price could be reduced along with the amount of defects. Via [The Solar Pocket Factory]

If cloudy Germany can do it... Germany's not a very sunny place, yet yet it leads the world in solar power , showing that you don't have to be in the middle of the Sahara desert to generate lots of clean power from the sun.
In July 2013, it set a new world record, producing 5.1 terawatt -hours, a mindbogglingly big number that leaves the U.S. far behind with its 0.764 TWh record for May 2013 (we don't have data more recent than that). The only thing that comes close is other solar record by Germany, and Germany's world wind power record of 5 TWh in January earlier this year. Build a $300 underground greenhouse for year-round gardening [W/VIDEO] Growers in colder climates often utilize various approaches to extend the growing season or to give their crops a boost, whether it’s coldframes, hoop houses or greenhouses.
Greenhouses are usually glazed structures, but are typically expensive to construct and heat throughout the winter. A much more affordable and effective alternative to glass greenhouses is the walipini (an Aymara Indian word for a “place of warmth”), also known as an underground or pit greenhouse. First developed over 20 years ago for the cold mountainous regions of South America, this method allows growers to maintain a productive garden year-round, even in the coldest of climates. The benefits of incorporating hay or straw into your compost bin are numerous: It can be used to create a large amount of compost quickly, it serves as a carbon (brown) ingredient, and it’s an abundant organic resource on farms thats can be applied both before and after use—think livestock feed-spoilage waste and old bedding.
Just as this resource has its place in the compost pile, it also serves well outside your pile as the material for your compost bin walls. A straw-bale compost bin is easy to build, is quick to expand or downsize, and helps maintain moisture and heat in the compost pile while allowing for air circulation. Because straw is compostable, your straw-bale walls will begin to decompose with the pile. Once the pile has cooked for awhile, you can actually dismantle and mix the bales into the compost for a zero-waste, temporary compost bin. 10 Reasons Why EarthShips Are F!#%ing Awesome.
