The Indicator: 101 Things I Didn’t Learn in Architecture School. Carry it with you. 3] Do not drink at work and especially do not get toasted around your colleagues under any circumstances. 4] No matter how highly you may think of yourself you may still be a minion in the eyes of others who hold more power than you. 5] Once you leave architecture school not everybody cares about architecture or wants to talk about it. 6] All eating habits and diets acquired during school should be jettisoned. 7] The hygiene habits you kept in architecture school are inappropriate for real life; bathe regularly and change your underwear. 8] The rush and exhilaration you experience in studio may be inversely proportional to how much you will enjoy working for a firm. 9] It’s architecture, not medicine.

Heineken WOBO: When Beer Met Architecture A very wise man, Homer Simpson, once described alcohol as “the cause of, and solution to, all of life’s problems.” While this may not necessarily be true for all problems, fifty years ago it seemed that beer was going to play a part in solving a housing shortage on the Caribbean island of Curaçao, thanks to a bizarre, yet socially conscious, piece of design. Upon visiting Curaçao during a world tour of his factories in 1960, brewing magnate Alfred Heineken was struck by two things: the beaches were littered with beer bottles - many bearing his name - and there was a shortage of affordable building materials, which meant the lower-classes were consigned to poor quality housing.
In a stroke of either genius or madness, Heineken realized that both problems would be solved if people could build their houses with his beer bottles. Intent on realizing his vision, he enlisted Dutch architect N. Tiny NYC Apartment Renovation Full of Nooks and Cubbies. How do you make a tiny New York City apartment into a livable 240-square foot space with a sleeping loft? You enlist the help of Brooklyn architect Tim Seggerman, who renovated this Upper West Side brownstone studio into what it is today. The space was in poor shape to begin with so they incorporated blond woods to build the interior out, including the loft over the kitchen.
A nook creates a cubby-like library to crawl into. Can you believe they were able to fit a washing machine in there?! To see the entire space, visit Dwell. Photos by David Engelhardt.
Fast Company. ‘California Roll House’ by Violent Volumes | Archivenue. A structure which self-adapts to its extreme environment, the prefabricated ‘California Roll House’ by Korean practice Violent Volumes uses the latest in sustainable technologies and mechanized systems to maintain a comfortable atmosphere in the desert surrounding. A carbon fiber truss frame system supports the irregular wrapping form, providing a lightweight and strong skeleton on which a solid exterior shell is attached to reflect the intense sun.
Transparent glass panels change opacity automatically with the angle of the sun to absorb the nighttime coolth and reject the daytime solar gain. The roof element then transforms into an entry courtyard, providing a flat artificial ground plane from which one can enter the hydraulically- powered door, which is the only door in and out of the house and services all spaces. Interior curtains subdivide the rooms for privacy, with skylights for extra light. Blue Plan for Copenhagen Harbour by Tredje Natur and PK3. Danish architects Tredje Natur and PK3 have designed a series of artificial islands that will transform Copenhagen's harbour into a recreational area filled with wildlife and water sports (+ slideshow). Above: House of Water Commissioned by the city's planning department, Tredje Natur and PK3 were inspired by Copenhagen's long history of artificially constructed islands, many of which served as a navy base in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, to create the masterplan.
Entitled Blue Plan, it covers five zones in and around the harbour and is conceived as a public recreation area for residents and tourists, as well as an educational facility. "The harbour bath is now so clean that the tourists and citizens of the city can both bathe and fish here - a privilege only a few large harbour cities in the world share," explained Tredje Natur's Flemming Rafn Thomsen and Ole Schrøder, describing how they imagine the space as "a showcase for Danish water technology". Home | Snarkitecture. Welcome - Goettsch Partners, Inc. “A Fluid Dream” Art Hotel / dEEP Architects. dEEP Architects have developed a design concept for the development of an art-based hotel that will be constructed just north of the Beijing National Stadium (The Bird Nest) as part of Beijing’s “Post Olympic Commercial Strategy.” The design concept, which the architects call “A Fluid Dream,” borrows from several sources. The surrealism of Salvador Dali is a driving force of formal fluidity of the design, while the concept of a nest egg is the source of privacy for the hotel units, derived from the affectionate nickname of the nearby stadium. Read on for more on this project after the break. This dream hotel will occupy approximately 10,000 sq meters and will have about 1,500 square meters of courtyard space. The interior spaces are designed with a fluid formality, from columns to atriums and balconies; the spatial definition of the interiority of the hotel is soft and continuous.
The interior space is designed from the user’s perspective. Froyo Yogurteria / Ahylo Studio. Edgecliff Medical Centre Interior by Enter Architecture. Enter Architecture have recently have completed an interior project for a Medical Centre for Austistic Children in Sydney, Australia. Project description At 150sqm, the project was modest in its footprint but sets a clear example of digitally fabricated interiors, and a prototype to see how these projects perform. In early conversations with the client, priorities were quickly realised: 3 radiating treatment rooms, a central reception area, lots of play spaces, soft furnishings like beanbags and excellent visibility – all of which contributed to the genesis for the ideas and space planning that followed.Design sensitivity was imperative when considering the function of the space and very much influenced the final form.
Having a clear understanding of the client’s needs on a day to day basis and moreover the needs of visiting patients, meant practical issues were also of high importance. Interior Design: Enter Architecture Photography: Brett Boardman. Tbilisi Public Service Hall by Studio Fuksas. Studio Fuksas have completed the Tbilisi Public Service Hall in Tbilisi, Georgia. Description from the designers The Tbilisi Public Service Hall is situated in the central area of the city and it overlooks the Kura river. The building is 28.000 mq.
It is made up of 7 volumes that contain offices (each volume is made up of 4 floors located on different levels). These volumes are placed around a ”central public square”, which is the core of the project, where there is the front office services. Offices are connected to each other by internal footbridges that stretches on different levels.Volumes and the central public space are towered above by 11 big ”petals” that are independent both formally and structurally from the rest of the building. Three of those big petals covers the central space. Architecture: Studio Fuksas. Maison du Boisé by Gestion René Desjardins. Gestion René Desjardins have designed the Maison du Boisé in rural Quebec, Canada for a family with three young children and possibly a fourth.
Project description Once they had chosen a wooded site, the mandate was to create a house that would specifically address the children’s well-being. From there, the mother was interested in colour and the father wanted a design that would last “indefinitely”. As for the style, they agreed it would be modern but “not minimalist”.Highly refined, they are the antithesis of popular notions of a family home, excessively “cosy,” overburdened with colours and objects. Then one begins to perceive the sensitivity of the approach taken. « What does a child need to feel at home?

Holm Architecture Office (HAO) and AI have been invited to create a proposal for the city of Daqiuzhuang in northern China. Sited in a newly developed part of the city, the new cultural building takes its form from the traditional Chinese courtyard square.
By lifting the square in the diagonal corners, dual entry points to the building are created which leads visitors and locals through the building’s ground level public programs to the mid- and upper- level exhibition spaces while extending the existing North- South axis of the surrounding city. More images and architects’ description after the break.
The DQZ Culture Center is situated approximately 200 kilometers south of Beijing in northern China. The inner courtyard of the building creates a protected lush landscape with cherry trees and terraces, which can be used as an outdoor venue for local theater and festival events. “We are exited for the opportunity to work with the city of Daqiuzhuang. Groninger Museum Revitalisation | Atelier Mendini | Project. After a renovation project which took over 8 months, the Groninger Museum will reopen its doors to the public on Sunday 19 December. The entire building has regained its original lustre and and its colours have been fully restored. Several rooms have been thoroughly renovated by the top designers Maarten Baas, Studio Job and Jaime Hayon.
They designed, respectively, the Mendini Restaurant, the Job Lounge and the Info Center, the ultramodern digital visitors’ information centre. Interior The Groninger Museum can hold its own with other top museums in the Netherlands and Western Europe. To hold this position requires constant innovation and improvement. As a starting point for their spectacular new design of the reception hall Job Lounge, Studio Job took the typical 19th-century private gentlemen’s clubs, frequented by their characteristic members, all smoking and wearing top hats.
Exterior During the revitalization project, the museum’s exterior underwent major repairs. Design team: Oasis Pastoral Care, Linz, 2011. FREE’s Winning Chapel Design To Rise In Miami.
