The best Indian restaurants in London - Cooking Index. As a native Londoner I am frequently asked by visitors to the capital what the best Indian restaurant in London is. This may seem strange to some but Indian food is the most widely eaten food in Britain’s restaurants and a former foreign secretary, Robin Cook, went as far as saying that chicken tikka marsala should be considered “a true British national dish”. From my experience, Brits abroad yearn for a ‘proper Indian’ more than almost anything when they move overseas. Across Britain the number of Indian restaurants has grown from 500 in 1960 to 3,000 in 1980 to more than 8,000 today; they now employ around 70,000 people and take in more than £2 billion ($4 billion) per year. Indian food is actually something of a misnomer as the first Indian restaurants in the UK were all run by Bangladeshis and the Bangladeshis still dominate the Indian restaurant scene today.

Of course the Indian food served in most British Indian restaurants is nothing like the food you would get in India. Tonkotsu. Bacon is a great enhancement to any dish (bacon bits in salad?

YUMM), and it was just one of those fatty, lazy weekends. Bacon wrapped around scallops is amazingly good, and make for great appetizers at parties. Of course, I was cooking for two, so the leftovers just made for a great snack the next morning. The spicy mayo dip provides a great kick to the dish, and you should definitely adjust the amount of Sriracha based on your spiciness tolerance. Ingredients: 8 sea scallops 8 slices bacon 1/3 cup teriyaki sauce Olive oil 8 toothpicks Spicy Mayo Dip: 1/2 cup mayonnaise 1 1/2 tbsp Sriracha Hot Chili 1/2 lime, juiced 1 tbsp chopped cilantro Instructions: 1) Marinate the scallops in the teriyaki sauce for 20 minutes. 2) Wrap each scallop in a piece of bacon and secure with a toothpick. 3) Combine the ingredients for the Spicy Mayo dip.

Caravan Exmouth Market - Clerkenwell EC1R - Restaurant Review. Time Out says Posted: Tue Jul 24 2012 Now an Exmouth Market fixture, Caravan has matured into a lively local favourite. The restaurant/bar is an unintimidatingly modern space, with some quirky touches (check out the light fittings). When busy – which is often – it’s noisy, but we’ve few other complaints.

Time Out says Posted: Thu Sep 20 2012 Why did the vegan cross the road? Because there was nothing to eat at the Chicken Shop. This venture underneath Pizza East and Dirty Burger makes a similar virtue of its specialism. Chickens turn and blacken on a medieval-looking wood-fired spit, a man in a chain-mail glove hacks them into quarters, and your order of a whole, half or quarter bird arrives without delay. Spicy but not too much so, blackened but not excessively, it is, yes, finger-lickin’ chicken.

Time Out says Posted: Wed Aug 22 2012 Whereas the original Caravan (on Exmouth Market) is a small space, with a neighbourhood vibe, this offshoot is an altogether bigger, more urbane operation. The large, industrial-looking room lacks intimacy, but has a laid-back buzz and great people-watching opportunities. The ethos is the same in both branches: welcoming, efficient staff and a menu of what they call ‘well travelled food’.

Most are small plates – deep-fried duck egg with baba ganoush, chorizo oil and crispy shallots, say, or grits, collard greens and brown shrimp butter, plus a few large plates and (at King’s Cross only) a handful of first-class pizzas. Antepliler, Harringay The main road that runs through Harringay, Green Lanes, is home to several great Turkish restaurants. Three in particular are regularly namechecked by local authorities on such matters: Yayla (429 Green Lanes), Hala (29 Green Lanes) and this gem. Antepliler is actually three premises: a cafe, the restaurant and a patisserie, whose various pistachio and walnut baklavas, made with good quality floral honeys, are not to be missed.

The restaurant – plain and sturdy, a solid traditional Ottoman space – majors on charcoal-grilled kebabs and dishes cooked in the huge wood-fired oven that squats by the entrance. At £1.50 (takeaway), the lahmacun, a kind of thin, crisp Turkish pizza, topped with a hugely tasty, quietly fiery mix of minced lamb, chilli, garlic, onions, fresh herbs and pulped tomato, is exceptional value.
