We have just released the first beta of the Drupal OpenLayers module . It's been a pretty crazy adventure as to how we got here, and there are still high hopes for the future. This post is going to be a long one, and should give you the complete introduction to this new mapping module for Drupal, and will also build on and borrow from my previous post on building this module . What is OpenLayers? OpenLayers is a free, open-source Javascript library that provides an easy interface to bring together any sort of map tiles, markers, features, and other GIS goodness. OpenLayers was initially developed by MetaCarta ; it is now a project of the Open Source Geospatial Foundation . http://zzolo.org/thoughts/drupal-and-openlayers

http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/API OpenStreetMap has an Editing API for fetching and saving raw geodata from/to the OpenStreetMap database — this is the entry page for the documentation. If you just want to embed a map into a webpage, you don't want this API. Use a Web Map Framework instead. REST specifications for the editing API API v0.6 - ( currently used , as of April 2009) API v0.5 (no longer used); though this document may still be of use API v0.4 (no longer used) API v0.3 (no longer used)

For quite some time now I've been thinking about the best way to create a mapping and local information site for the Isle of Man - what will become Mapping.im once ready. Currently it's a very bare, ugly site, so don't pay too much attention to it. Working with the Drupal content management system so much, I naturally thought of that as the way forward, largely because of its flexibility but also because it gives me a good head start in developing a site that can do all sorts of things already, without me having to implement them individually. I had jotted down some notes in the past about what I wanted out of a site, but never really got quite as far as implementation details. Then earlier this week I went to an old haunt of mine - an Irish bar by where I lived in the first few months of being here in Stuttgart - and sat down with my notepad and pen (both of which I carry at all times). http://www.dankarran.com/blog/2006/10/openstreetmap-module-for-drupal
