Teach21 Project Based Learning. Well in advance of the PBL, contact and schedule speakers and panel members and schedule the computer lab.

Teach21 Project Based Learning

Use the Storyboard throughout to schedule activities, experiments, computer lab, discussions, presentations, and assessments for the project. The project is designed for one hour and 30 minute classes. Some steps may require multiple days to complete based on group’s ability and availability of technology. The teacher may want to create a student/calendar with due dates and check points.

High Tech High - Project Based Learning. This project integrates biology, math, and the humanities in a study of the biogeography of San Diego Bay.

High Tech High - Project Based Learning

The essential question for the project is, "How can we be better environmental stewards of San Diego Bay? " Eleventh grade students in the core academic classes of biology, mathematics and humanities at High Tech High conduct an environmental assessment of the fauna along the intertidal zone of San Diego Bay. Using extensive GIS-assisted analysis of species abundance and diversity, students consider human impact upon different sites within the Bay. CASES Online: Creating Active Student Engagement in the Sciences. What is CASES Online?

CASES Online: Creating Active Student Engagement in the Sciences

CASES Online is a collection of inquiry-based lessons to engage K-12 and undergraduate students in exploring the science behind real-world problems. Through CASES, you can transform your students into motivated investigators, self-directed and life-long learners, critical thinkers and keen problem solvers. Our cases are grounded in Problem-Based Learning (PBL), Investigative Case-Based Learning (ICBL), and related student-centered pedagogies.

[more] What's new in CASES Online? Materials for over 350 cases are now posted and we are continually working to publish more. 6 Strategies to Truly Personalize PBL. In the past, I wrote about how, along with other teachers, I've ventured into truly personalized project-based learning.

6 Strategies to Truly Personalize PBL

I discussed the challenges we face as well as what it looks like in the classroom. Many of us may be personalizing PBL without even knowing it. Teachers have always had students pursue their own research projects on their own questions. Classroom Sample Assessment Tasks. The Classroom Sample Tasks blend content, practices, and concepts from both the NGSS and the Common Core State Standards.

Classroom Sample Assessment Tasks

Teachers across the disciplines have collaborated to write sample tasks, which are the result of a vision of integrating science, engineering, and mathematics for classroom use. Currently, nine draft middle and high school tasks are available below. Additional tasks, including those for elementary grade levels, will be added as they become available. Educators are encouraged to modify these tasks for their needs and to let us know how they can be improved (via the website contact form).

It important to note that these tasks are drafts and that they will be revised as we receive feedback from users. 10 Ready-to-Borrow Project Ideas. If you're planning to give project-based learning a try during the coming school year, you may hope a spark of inspiration will strike during the summer months that will lead to a memorable PBL experience.

10 Ready-to-Borrow Project Ideas

And maybe that's just the excuse that hard-working teachers need to take a hike or daydream by a pool. But here's another surefire strategy for PBL planning: borrow project ideas from your colleagues and adapt or remix to fit your context. Please Login for this Restricted Resource. CBD Home. The Whittier, Alaska Artificial Reef - Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies.

A 3-5 Week Science Unit for Grades 4-6 This teaching unit focuses on the ecology and importance of high-latitude rocky reefs as a habitat for marine life and the potential of artificial reefs to mitigate, or compensate, for negative impacts on marine habitats that result from human activities.

The Whittier, Alaska Artificial Reef - Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies

It culminates with a student role-play of the federal permtting process to consider ecological and social trade-offs about permitting the loss of habitat and determining the appropriate mitigation strategy. The teaching unit is the result of an experiment in Prince William Sound, Alaska. In May 2006, Alaska's first pre-planned artificial reef was installed in Smitty's Cove in northwestern Prince William Sound, Alaska as mitigation for a project that filled in subtidal habitat to enlarge a barge ramp near the town of Whittier. Inquiry in the Classroom: 7 Simple Tools To Get You Started

But teachers who use an inquiry based approach can provide techniques that help students learn the questions to ask that may spark a natural interest. The Tree of Life Web Project (ToL) is a collaborative effort of biologists and nature enthusiasts from around the world.

Tree of Life Web Project

On more than 10,000 World Wide Web pages, the project provides information about biodiversity, the characteristics of different groups of organisms, and their evolutionary history (phylogeny). Each page contains information about a particular group, e.g., salamanders, segmented worms, phlox flowers, tyrannosaurs, euglenids, Heliconius butterflies, club fungi, or the vampire squid.

ToL pages are linked one to another hierarchically, in the form of the evolutionary tree of life. Starting with the root of all Life on Earth and moving out along diverging branches to individual species, the structure of the ToL project thus illustrates the genetic connections between all living things. Project-Based Learning Explained. Like a list of pizza toppings or color combinations, the list of potential project-based learning ideas is seemingly endless. The topics themselves are too numerous to count and the list becomes even more infinite when thinking of all the different products a project can result in. Take “volcanoes,” for instance. Simply picking the topic is only the first step. HOME - AP Biology Project Based Learning (PBL) Units. Background.
