3 Record-Breaking Fabergé Egg Auctions From Across the Industry - Auction Daily

Tsar Alexander III became so enamored with them that he insisted on giving one to his wife every Easter until he died in 1894. His son, Tsar Nicholas II, kept the House of Fabergé busy crafting eggs for both his mother and wife. A century later, Fabergé egg auctions now inspire spirited bidding given the pieces’ scarcity and the stories behind them.

Auction Daily takes a look back at three of the most notable examples. The Fabergé Winter Egg at Christie’s, 2002 Empress Maria Feodorovna received the first Fabergé egg shortly after Easter in 1885. Three thousand diamonds cross the exterior of the Winter Egg in a snowflake-like pattern. Christie’s offered the Winter Egg with an estimate of USD 4 million to $6 million. Liz Catalano Around 12:20 AM on April 15th, 1912, the RMS Titanic sent out a fateful distress call. The ship had just made contact with an iceberg during its maiden voyage. By the time the nearby RMS Carpathia received the message, the disaster had already begun. However, the Carpathia still arrived in time to save over 700 passengers and crew members. The Royal Mail Ship (RMS) Carpathia spent over 80 years at the bottom of the sea after an encounter with German submarines in World War I.

The RMS Carpathia went down in history as a footnote to the Titanic story. When the ship’s crew received the Titanic’s distress call, the Carpathia was already carrying around 740 of its own passengers. Just a few years later, the Carpathia was pressed into military service with the outbreak of World War I. The RMS Carpathia wreck was soon acquired by Premier Exhibitions Inc., an American company that also manages relics from the Titanic. The sale will also include pieces of the Carpathia itself. Today, Tamara de Lempicka’s artworks from the Paris avant-garde during the 1920s and 30s are the most sought after.
