Going with the flow

In 2012 alone, the cost of direct flood damage hit nearly half a billion dollars. However, because the factors contributing to flood risk are not fully understood, river basin management -- and even the calculation of flood insurance premiums -- may be misguided. A new study by UC Santa Barbara's Michael Singer and colleagues presents a paradigm shift in flood hazard analysis that could change the way such risk is assessed in the future. The results are published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters. Existing analyses attribute flood hazard to how often high water flows occur. "Our results demonstrate that changes in river channel boundaries directly impact flood hazard trends across the U.S. ," said Singer, an associate researcher at UCSB's Earth Research Institute.

Florida banned state workers from using term ‘climate change’ – New report

Officials with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), the agency in charge of setting conservation policy and enforcing environmental laws in the state, issued directives in 2011 barring thousands of employees from using the phrases “climate change” and “global warming”, according to a bombshell report by the Florida Center for Investigative Reporting (FCIR). The report ties the alleged policy, which is described as “unwritten”, to the election of Republican governor Rick Scott and his appointment of a new department director that year. Scott, who was re-elected last November, has declined to say whether he believes in climate change caused by human activity.

“I’m not a scientist,” he said in one appearance last May. Scott’s office did not comment on Sunday, when contacted by the Guardian. Brussels, Belgium – Today WWF launches a new report – “From crisis to opportunity: Five steps to sustainable European economies” – showing that resource efficiency alone could generate per year the equivalent of the Juncker Investment Plan of over 300 billion euros for the EU economy.

Technology, globalisation and the future of work in Europe: Essays on employment in a digitised economy. The purpose of this collection of essays is to highlight the most likely trends in employment across Europe over the next 10 years, and to find out how experts think policymakers, firms and individuals should respond.

Technology, globalisation and the future of work in Europe: Essays on employment in a digitised economy

The industrial structure of European economies and the types of occupation that they support are changing. This change takes many forms in different national contexts, but there are some common themes. There has been an increase in service-sector employment, both in low-skilled customer service work and in high-skilled 'knowledge' occupations, and a corresponding drop in manufacturing employment. This has contributed to a 'polarisation' of the workforce in many countries, with more high-skill and low-skill jobs but fewer requiring mid-level skills. Cities Outlook 2015. The recent announcement of the devolution of some powers from Whitehall to Greater Manchester is the outcome of a decade-long discussion about the role of cities in the national economy.

Cities Outlook 2015

This year’s Cities Outlook reflects on the performance of city economies over the last 10 years based on four main indicators , population, businesses and housing affordability, the approach of policy over this period (both under Labour and the Coalition) and its implications for further devolution. Now in its eight year, Cities Outlook provides the authoritative economic index of the 64 largest cities and towns in the UK. To explore the data behind the report, visit our data tool (beta). The danger of flooding throughout the UK remains serious and imminent with a huge risk to health and wellbeing as well as a significant financial threat. The 2014 Autumn Statement announced that over £2.3 billion will be directed towards over 1,400 flooding and coastal erosion protection schemes. Forecasting 101. Estimating the number of properties at risk from groundwater flooding. Groundwater flooding is a complex phenomenon.

Estimating the number of properties at risk from groundwater flooding

Historically, most attention has been given to groundwater flooding on chalk, where up to 138 000 properties in England lie in areas at risk of groundwater flooding. It is harder to estimate the risk of flooding from groundwater on other aquifers, but up to 152 000 further properties could be affected. In total, an estimated 122 000 to 290 000 properties in England lie in areas at risk of groundwater flooding. These numbers do not include properties also at risk of flooding from rivers or sea. While this is significantly fewer than the number that are at risk from other sources of flooding, groundwater flooding is still locally significant in many areas.

The digital communications infrastructure strategy

When this government came into office, superfast broadband was in its infancy. 4G was still two years away from deployment. In 2010 we set out our goal for the UK to have the best superfast broadband network in Europe. Today we announce our ambition that ultrafast broadband of at least 100Mbps should become available to nearly all UK premises. This document sets out our strategy to deliver this ambition. We are well on the way to meeting our original target. We remain committed to ensuring that the benefits of better broadband are felt across the UK.

Looking ahead, the market is mobilising to deliver ultrafast services, including gigabit services on demand. ‘Climate change’ — there, we said it! Florida Gov.

‘Climate change’ — there, we said it!

Rick Scott has denied — and his office continues to deny — that there is an official policy banning state employees from using the terms “climate change” and “global warming” in state documents. But days after the news broke, additional current and former staffers say it’s true that the terms were discouraged from use.
