Google Friend Connect, now more personalized. On the subway, I bump elbows with a guy for 20 city blocks without exchanging a single word. Forty-five minutes later, I find the same guy at the local guitar shop, and we start to talk — turns out he plays a Gibson Les Paul just like I do. We may have been strangers on the train, but in the guitar shop, we discover our shared passion for guitars.

Often, the web can feel like that subway. There are probably people commuting to the places you regularly visit, but you don’t know who those people are, and your paths may never cross. With this in mind, we're thrilled to introduce a new set of Friend Connect features that let site owners help their visitors get to know each other and personalize their site's experience and content. Social Search just went live in Google Labs. Google announced that it was working on this Social Search feature at the Web 2.0 Summit last week, but at that time, Google’s Marissa Mayer announced that it would only be available “in a few weeks.” Social Search taps into a user’s social network profiles and displays relevant links and status updates that members of a user’s own social network have shared at the bottom of the default search results page. According to Google, Social Search will enhance the search experience on Google by providing users with more personally relevant search results. To get started, you first have to head over to Google Labs‘s experimental section and activate this feature.

For now, Social Search will only be available in the US and in English. Projects. iGoogle is Now Social: Google Launches Social Gadgets. Google just rolled out 18 social gadgets for its iGoogle start page. These social gadgets turn iGoogle into a far more interactive and social experience, as users can now play casual games with other iGoogle users and share videos and to-do lists right from the iGoogle homepage.

As Google’s Marissa Mayer and Rose Yao, iGoogle’s product manager, told us yesterday, while the first incarnation of iGoogle was about connecting people with information, the service will now also focus on connecting people to each other. These new social gadgets already launched in Australia earlier this month, so this announcement doesn’t come as too much of a surprise, though the U.S. launch also brings a number of new U.S. -centric gadgets to iGoogle from organizations like NPR, the Huffington Post, and the New York Times. iGoogle as Google’s Social Hub? On the surface, this doesn’t seem like a major announcement. Keeping Up With Your Friends Social Gadgets Lots of Potential. Home | 12seconds.tv (beta) Pingle | Curious Squid.
