GeoAPI Home. Tagging The Real World: Sekai Camera For The iPhone Is Alive And. A total of 52 companies launched at last year’s TechCrunch50 conference. Five of them got jury selection prizes, there was one big winner and a very special crowd pleaser: Japan-based Tonchidot’s Sekai Camera, an iPhone app that presents tagged information in the form of a graphical layer over images in the iPhone camera.

Charismatic CEO Takahito Iguchi delivered a memorable demonstration, making the audience go crazy by fending off questions of TC50 judges such as Tim O’Reilly if Sekai Camera really works with the words “Join us!” Or “We have a patent!”. The reason for the skepticism: Iguchi’s on-stage show mainly centered on a pre-produced video clip, not an actual product demo. This left people wondering if Sekai Camera isn’t just vaporware for almost half a year during which it seemed like nothing happened.

But today I saw the app is real and working – on an iPhone. Tonchidot today showed they were rightfully chosen as a TechCrunch50 finalist. But Tonchidot is working on it. JotYou: Location-Based Mobile Phone Messaging - ReadWriteWeb. The basic concept of location-based mobile phone messaging is that you can send a text message to someone’s cell phone and they will receive the SMS message only when they enter into the exact location you specify. How can this be useful? Let’s say you’re up really late working and you want your co-worker to pick up some donuts in the morning on their way to the office.

Using a service called JotYou, you can send a message to your friend’s cell phone and have them receive it just before they get to the donut shop. You could use the service to remind yourself to do things when you drive by specific locations in a city. Next time you need to pick up some groceries from the local supermarket on the way home, create a JotYou message that will send you a text message when you drive near the supermarket. JotYou also has a tracking feature that you can turn on for more fun stuff like games, events, and contests. To get started with JotYou, you need to first create a free account.

Gears Future APIs: Location API on Dion Almaer's Blog. Dec 21 I have spoken at a bunch of conferences in Europe this quarter. From the Future of Web Apps, and @mediaAjax in London, to JavaZone and JavaPolis in Oslo and Belgium. When I speak about Gears there, I get a lot of questions about Mobile Gears. A lot of the features of Gears arguably make even MORE sense on a mobile device. One very handy API to have would be a Location API (although it would be useful in other contexts too): The purpose of this API is to provide means to fetch the location of a device running a Web browser with Gears. Here is the API as a code example using it: I can imagine the fun games that I could write here, let alone the interesting business apps that could take the location context into consideration.
