It is not meant to replace the several excellent biographies and encyclopedias which have been published in print form, and which contain much more information than is intended for this index. The information here has been derived mainly from five publications - Ezra Warner's comprehensive works Generals in Gray and Generals in Blue, the Historical Times Illustrated Encyclopedia of the Civil War, Mark Boatner's Civil War Dictionary, and Francis Heitman's Historical Register and Dictionary of the United States Army 1789-1903.
