Photography workshop long exposures. As photographers we capture a precious moment in time with our cameras. Now, with the advent of extreme neutral density filters such as Lee’s “Big Stopper” we have the ability to slow the world down and capture the effects of time passing on the landscape in ways that our eyes can never perceive. If you love this minimalist style of image making, with streaking clouds, smooth translucent water and a surreal feel then this is the ideal workshop for you.
Join Doug Chinnery on the Sussex coast as he teaches you how to master the skills necessary, both in camera and composition to make effective and pleasing long exposure images. Lee Filters have provided us at Light and Land with some “Big Stopper” filters, so if you don’t have one and have wanted to try the techniques you can borrow one for the duration of the workshop. We have chosen Brighton as our location as it holds so many great subjects for long exposure photography.
Impressions of London photography workshop. There can be nowhere more abundant with opportunities for street photography than the streets of London. This is a tour that takes street photography in a slightly different direction and seeks to tease out an alternative approach. The focus will not be the people, although in London, no doubt people will feature, but rather in the urban landscape & architecture.
Doug Chinnery’s now classic London ‘Light & Life’ workshops have become a firm favourite with Light & Landers - he has a wide reaching knowledge of the city and is well placed to advise on both traditional and creative techniques. Valda Bailey has twice attended workshops in New York with photography giant Jay Maisel - widely recognised as one of the top street photographers in the world. She travels frequently and also has extensive experience of shooting in an urban environment across the globe.
The key to success out on the street is adaptability. Deserts of the United Arab Emirate Tour. Northern Ireland is one of the most spectacular and untouched pieces of coastline in the entire United Kingdom. Although it’s fair to say many of us prefer to travel as far afield as the Scottish islands in search of dramatic landscapes, Northern Ireland has remarkable scenery that is both overlooked and under photographed. Staying on the north east coast, we will be photographing some truly remarkable scenes. Not only is there the dramatic coastline around the Giants Causeway, there are subtle landscapes too.
With echoes of Devon and Cornwall in abundance, Northern Ireland is truly a place to cherish and remember. Expect to venture into Ireland too, as there are wonderful possibilities not too far from Northern Ireland Borders. Fanad Lighthouse is one particular dramatic part of our trip. Based near the grandeur of the Giants Causeway, this landscape will feature extensively throughout the tour. Winter in Glencoe Photography Tour. Glen Coe and nearby Rannoch Moor contain some of the British Isles best wild mountain and moorland scenery. When you add in the possibility of the landscape being clothed in snow and ice, something we don’t see that often these days in the south of the UK as global warming gathers pace, they become truly magical places.
There are few more beautiful sights than golden, early morning sunlight striking the spectacular snow covered Buchaille Etive Mor. Experienced photographers know that, far from being dreary, late winter provides the very best lighting opportunities for landscape photography: the sun remains low in the sky all day long giving wonderful directional light combined with the year’s moodiest cloudscapes. This intensive workshop is specially designed for beginners and those at an intermediate level.
There are two leaders, David Ward and Phil Malpas. We will be based in the comfortable and wonderfully situated Clachaig Inn. Deserts of the United Arab Emirate Tour. 3 day photo Workshop in Brighton. As photographers we capture a precious moment in time with our cameras. Weston-super-Mare Photography Workshop. Second tour due to popular demand! Iceland is incredible at any time of year but through the winter months when the landscape is transformed by a covering of snow and ice it becomes even more spectacular than ever. Frozen waterfalls, beaches littered with icebergs, snow covered volcanoes and mountains and of course Aurora Borealis will be the highlights of the tour. The first three days will be spent on the West Coast of Iceland at Snaefellsnes. Based at Grundarfjordur we are perfectly positioned to photograph all of the peninsular, especially the iconic Kirkjufell mountain. This wizard hat shaped mountain is incredibly photogenic and we may get lucky enough to see the mountain covered in snow. Then we make the jump to Vik. Then for the last leg of the tour we will base ourselves near Jokulsarlon. Please note- A reasonable degree of fitness will be required to negotiate a possible icy terrain from time to time.
Cairngorms National Park Photography Tour. Autumn is, for most photographers, the favourite season, and autumn in the Cairngorms is a sight to behold. The hillsides of birch, oak, beech and rowan explode with colour and provide a wonderful palette for the camera, especially when reflected in the lochs and rivers streaming from the hills. The rugged beauty of the area offers a wealth of opportunity to experiment with some different techniques. The weather in Scotland changes rapidly and a sudden fall off in the quality of the light is the perfect time to try out some ICM (Intentional Camera Movement) or multiple exposures. Such techniques are controllable to a certain degree and experimentation will give you the chance to delight in some of the happy accidents that can occur by moving the camera and combining exposures.
Although the tour will aim to teach you the fundamentals of multiple exposure/ICM photography, the most important objective is to help you to pursue your own creative direction and way of seeing. London Photography Workshop. London is quite rightly one of the greatest destination cities in the World. For the photographer it has everything. Iconic views, stunning architecture spanning millennia, fascinating cultural diversity and ever changing light. On this city tour we will help you capture the heart and soul of London in all types of light. Our hotel puts us right in the heart of the city. The mighty Thames makes a wonderful feature, reflecting the colours in the sky by day and duplicating the city lights by night. To enable us to maximise our time with our cameras we have our own London “Cabbie”, Terry Gibbins, himself a photographer, to drive us. This also means we can travel to locations well away from the heart of the city, such as the Thames Flood Barrier and Canary Wharf.
Over the duration of the tour there will be opportunities to shoot from before sunrise through until late in the evening. Our daytime sessions will focus on making the most of capturing the very essence of London. South Downs Photography Tour. To the west of the seaside destination of Eastbourne lies the South Downs, the steep chalk cliffs rise majestically out of the English Channel to over 500 feet high and form the highest chalk cliffs in the UK!
Dotted along this coast are a multitude of photographic opportunities. The gentle meanders of the River Cuckmere lead into a classic view of the Seven Sisters with the coastguard cottages nestled in the foreground. Our base will be at the Sheldon Hotel in Eastbourne which is perfectly situated to explore the region. We will visit the Belle Tout Light House which sits atop the cliffs. This was made famous by its central role in TV drama “ The Life and Loves of a She Devil” and James Bond - “The Living Daylights”. Luckily it was dramatically saved from toppling into the sea by architects sliding it inland! On the beach below is the world famous Beachy Head lighthouse, its red and white stripes make it a natural focal point for photographers.
Brighton Long Exposures Photography Workshop. Shropshire & Powys Photography Tour. “Borderlands” Between the urban sprawl of the Midlands and vast remoteness of mid-Wales, there is a relatively unknown borderland which forms a physical, historical and cultural boundary between England and Wales. This is a wild and beautiful region full of hidden surprises. From wide expanses of heather-clad moorland to secret tree-lined valleys, this tour encompasses some truly photogenic landscapes.
As with all border regions, there is a darker side to this landscape. With Bronze Age burial sites, Iron Age hillforts and Offa’s Dyke, the troubled history of this place is never far from the surface - a feature which is reflected in its photographic potential. We will spend three days exploring the landscape of the region, honing our photographic skills and building a portfolio of images which reflect the drama and the intimacy of one of Britain’s best kept secrets.
And within this landscape we have a very special treat. New York Photography Vacation. The streets of New York are strangely familiar to every person who visits, made famous by the works of photographers such as Elliot Erwitt, Saul Leither, Horst Harmann, David Bailey. A photographer can’t fail to be inspired by the iconic skyline, cosmopolitan buzz of the streets or the peace of Central Park.
Join Paul Sanders as he guides you around the one of the most thrilling and photogenic cities in the world. You’ll have the opportunity to photograph the Big Apple from the heady heights above Fifth Avenue looking over The Empire State Building, capture the last light of the day as it sets Manhattan ablaze across The Hudson River or get up close and personal with the dazzling lights of Times Square.
Autumn is the perfect time to visit this visual paradise with Central Park giving a golden backdrop to the leisure time of New Yorkers. New York is not a city where you line up your tripods, it’s a city that has a different impact on every person who passes through it. New York City - Light and Land. New York City - Light and Land. Great New York Photography Holiday. The beautiful and unspoilt country of Slovenia lies at the heart of Europe, where the majestic Alps meet the Mediterranean Sea.
Bordered by Austria to the north, Hungary to the east, Croatia to the south and Italy to the west, this tiny country is approximately half the size of Switzerland and is home to some of the most photogenic scenery to be found anywhere in Europe. Largely mountainous, more than half the country is thickly forested, with a wealth of architectural and natural wonders to attract our attention. We will be based just 34 miles to the north-west of the capital Ljubijana and only 22 miles from the international airport in the Julian Alps, where the landscape is wild and beautiful.
The area is dominated by the precipitous peak of Mt. Triglav, the highest point in the country at over 9,000 feet. Our hotel is close to the centre of the mountain village of Bled within a stone’s throw of the picturesque Lake Bled in the heart of the Julian Alps.
Light & Land Santorini Photography Holiday. Many of the villages of Santorini are perched on the edge of one of the most spectacular volcanic calderas on the planet. The magnificent views across the caldera take in the picturesque villages with the exquisite blue domed churches for which this Greek Island is famed. Santorini lies at the southern end of the Cyclades group of Greek islands, the last stopping off point before Crete. It has been continually re-shaped over the centuries by a series of violent volcanic eruptions. The current archipelago surrounds a huge caldera filled with sea water. In the 18th Century the small island of Néa Kaméni rose from the sea in the centre of this crater and still hosts an active crater.
The last major eruption was in 1956. The volcanic setting is simply awesome - whitewashed houses with barrel roofs appear to ‘drip’ down the cliff faces like melting ice cream, until the land gives way to a 900 foot drop into the blue sea below.
