‘Arrival City’ by Doug Saunders - Book Review. Robert Alter on the King James Bible | Word Craft. The Heidelberg catechism, in German, Latin and English. Book Review - In the Valley of the Shadow - By James L. Kugel. Here’s another impressive bit of unpacking: In the ancient world, Kugel says, to become aware of God meant grasping the “eerie proximity” of this terrifying presence, as if God were waiting for you on the other side of a curtain. If you wanted to see him on the rare occasions when he crossed over, you had to undergo a sudden, radical shift in perspective. That, Kugel argues, is how we are to understand all the stories about the angels who visit the patriarchs and matriarchs in the Hebrew Bible. We know they’re angels, but Abraham and Sarah and Jacob and Joshua invariably mistake them for regular people, and we must watch at some length as each character struggles to understand who their mysterious visitors are.

When they finally do, the Bible stops using the term “angel,” and identifies the interlocutors simply as God. Review: Who Chose the Gospels? (Part 1) | Earliest Christianity. This is part 1 of my two-part review. Charles E. Hill presents his perspective on the formation of the fourfold gospel collection in his latest book, Who Chose the Gospels? Probing the Great Gospel Conspiracy.

Near the beginning of the first chapter, the following quotation from James M.

In the second century, Gospels that were later to lose out, as non-canonical, were about as common as Gospels that were later to win out, as canonical. (10) The remainder of this chapter is an attempt to show that the earliest manuscript evidence does not support Robinson’s contention. Chapter 4 considers the evidence from Clement of Alexandria, Serapion, and the Muratorian Fragment. 1. 2.
