Two blind men have had a 3mm device containing 1,500 light sensitive pixels implanted into the back of their eye. The trial, led by Professor Robert Maclaren and Tim Jackson at the Oxford Eye Hospital and Kings College Hospital in London, was carried out on two men who had lost their vision to retinitis pigmentosa, a disease involving progressive loss of function of photoreceptor cells in the eye. The device is connected to the optic nerve, and so sends signals to the visual cortex, about patterns of light in the external world. One of the patients, Chris James, describes the experience: "I am able to make out a curve or a straight line close-up but I find things at distance more difficult.

It is still early days as I have to learn to interpret the signals being sent to my brain from the chip. " The device relies on the incredible ability of the brain to learn and adapt.
