George Washington's Boyhood Home at Ferry Farm. George Washington was 6 years old in 1738 when his family moved to a farm in Stafford County, Virginia. The Washingtons called this place the Home Farm but it later became known as Ferry Farm because people crossed the Rappahannock River on a ferry from the farm to the town of Fredericksburg. The Washingtons did not own or operate the ferry but used it frequently to get to and from town. The site of the Washington house was located in July, 2008.
Read more about this exciting discovery! A visit to Ferry Farm starts in the Visitor Center where there are displays of colonial and Civil War artifacts found on the property and the archaeology lab, where archaeologists can usually be seen working Monday through Friday. After leaving the Visitor Center, guests can enjoy the gardens that feature plants grown in the 18th century. The 2014 archaeology dig season is scheduled to begin on May 6 and run through July. Many events take place at Ferry Farm and Kenmore throughout the year. Welcome to the George Washington's Ferry Farm Historical Archaeology Field School. Located in Fredericksburg, Virginia, Ferry Farm was the childhood home of George Washington.
It was the farm he inherited from his father, and it was where his mother Mary spent much of her life. It also is the setting for such celebrated Washington stories like his chopping his father’s cherry tree and his throwing a silver dollar across the Rappahannock River. But above all, it was the landscape on which the Father of the Country spent his formative years. Today no trace of the eighteenth-century Washington farmstead is visible. But that is changing, digging season by digging season and excvation pit by excavation pit. Beginning in 2002 The University of South Florida and George Washington’s Fredericksburg Foundation inaugurated their Historical Archaeological Field School as part of the extensive study of the early eighteenth-century Washington farmstead. The project seeks to locate, excavate, understand, and ultimately reconstruct the Washington family’s 1740s home.
