For the past couple of nights, while plowing through the codebase, I've been working on a plugin that allows you to communicate with servers through JSON with pure Blueprint nodes! Using DEM data to create height maps

There are a lot of programs around that can help with this by simulating natural process like erosion but you will still need some sort of base to start with. A common technique is to use some sort of procedural noise algorithm like perlin noise to create mountain-valley like structures. Getting the noise to look natural with the erosion algorithms can be difficult however. You can of course manually sculpt the height map in a program like zbrush or mudbox but this requires some artistic skill which not everyone has. I’m going to show you how to use DEM data as a base to then apply the standard erosion algorithms too. Using DEM data has some huge advantages. So lets get started. First you will need a program to open up the data.
