There are many reasons to search social media including monitoring for brand and reputation management purposes. Smart online marketers have also been using social search for other reasons including competitive research and opportunistic content marketing through social keyword trends. Most advice on how companies should be listening to the social web with minimal cost involves monitoring individual services, which is inefficient. Premium social media monitoring services do this much more effectively but can be expensive.
How old is the average Twitter or Facebook user? What about all the other social network sites, like MySpace, LinkedIn, and so on? How is age distributed across the millions and millions of social network users out there? To find out, we pulled together age statistics for 19 different social network sites, and crunched the numbers. Full list of sites in this study: Facebook , LinkedIn , MySpace , Twitter , Slashdot , Reddit , Digg , Delicious , StumbleUpon , FriendFeed , Last.fm , Friendster , LiveJournal , Hi5 , Tagged , Ning , Xanga , Classmates.com , Bebo . To get consistent age data for the various sites we used site demographics information for the United States gathered from Google’s Ad Planner service and then did some additional calculations to get all the data we needed.

For the third year running (see 2008 , 2009 ) I’m going to aggregate stats in the social networking space on a single blog post, and update it through the year. Data fiends should bookmark this post for future reference. Stats are important –but on their own, they don’t tell us much
Nielsen and Facebook recently joined forces to develop ad effectiveness solutions to determine consumer attitudes, brand perception and purchase intent from social media advertising. Perhaps unsurprisingly, immediately after the two companies announced their strategic love affair, Nielsen started publishing glowing reports about Facebook and how much time people are spending on social networks in general.Today, the companies are releasing the first insights from their alliance on the effectiveness of brand advertising on social networks, and lo and behold: the take-away conclusion is that apparently, Facebook ads work well in terms of campaign effectiveness. Note that we're not saying the report is bogus, but it's something to keep in mind if you decide to download it for yourself. (On a sidenote: are you a fan of TechCrunch on Facebook already?)
