And third, your favorite foreign release from 2010 may actually have been a piece of shit. I kid. Today, the indie world and the film world at large lost a giant in the field, watching Disney close the doors and turn the lights off on Miramax. As sad a day like today is, and as uncertain as the future is, we can still hold on to the memories. Most of them are now on Blu-ray. Or at least Laser Disc (because we all own one). The Pitch: Even if Rob Hunter doesn’t think Larry Clark’s harsh film about drug and sexual abandon amongst the youth in NYC is well acted, he’s wrong, and the movie is brilliant and challenging. 14. The Pitch: You probably haven’t seen this odd and creepy little flick, but if you have consider yourself one of the lucky few. 13. The Pitch: This film is mostly known for its twist, which is a shame, because the entire film is a thing of beauty. 12. 11. The 50 Scariest Movies of All Time. The 50 Scariest Movies of All Time What is it about a perfectly done horror movie? You can't say there's a single way to do it: some use the time time-tested hot-chick-in-distress formula, some hinge on graphic displays of gore and disembowelment that make you recoil (even though keep watching, you sick bastard), and some simply shake you to your core...and in some cases drive you to therapy. But however a good scare flick works, it works, and in the process creates what are arguably your most vivid movie traumas memories.
Ghosts, possessed kids, mutant killers, zombies—everyone has their own fear button, and everyone can have theirs pressed. Everyone. Point is, you may not find every movie in our collection of 50 to be paralyzingly creepy, but no matter who you are, best believe that there's at least one in here that'll haunt your dreams and seriously threaten your bladder control. It is our understanding that for a truly democratic society to exist, there must be a free flow of easily accessible information.
For the most part (not including heavy censorship in China), the Internet has allowed for this free flow of information to everyone and anyone with access to the internet and it is imperative that this right continues to be protected. Unfortunately, the principle of free flowing information does not exist in the mainstream media because our governments continue to allow large corporations to consolidate the entire media industry. For this reason, many facts, perspectives, and opinions do not make it to our televisions, movie theatres, newspapers, and radio stations. The documentaries below epitomize the importance of free flowing information and the lack of it in mainstream media. Please take the time to educate yourself and to educate others about the important issues raised in each of the documentaries. Top 20 Horror Movies (#20 - 11)
With Halloween upon us, it’s time to take a gory gander at some of the horror movies worth seeing. This list explores a variety of scary movies, from zombie flicks to vampire films (and remakes of those vampire films). And there will be controversy, oh yes. The 25 best horror movies you've never seen.
There are a lot of terrible horror movies out there. Possibly more than any other genre, horror seems to appeal to wannabe filmmakers who figure it’s easy and cheap to pull off a scary movie – and thanks to the success of many low budget horror movies, distributors seem to be putting out an awful lot of them. So I’d understand if you didn’t want to trawl through an endless sea of crap to find the few real gems amongst the cinematic slurry.
But I’m an addict, and keep coming back for more punishment. The payoff is that sometimes, very occasionally, you discover something brilliant. 25. There’s plenty of festive murder, a lovely animated section featuring angels and devils holding a curling match, and a wonderful showdown at an ice rink. 24. The 50 Best Movies on Netflix Instant (My Version) After coming across Josh Jackson’s recent list over at Paste Magazine, I thought: it’s a fine list, but my version would be considerably different. So, since I really really like compiling things, I decided to give it a go. A few constraints/parameters: (i) Despite the title, my list doesn’t pretend to be a “best of” list. It’s just a list of my favorites. (ii) I didn’t repeat any of Jackson’s selections, even though he chose a few I might’ve included, like Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Delicatessen and Spike Jonze’s Being John Malkovich. (iii) I only used one film per director, even in instances when I could’ve easily done multiple (Catherine Breillat, Wong Kar-wai, Buster Keaton, and Jean-Luc Godard come to mind).
(iv) Omissions abound, obviously. Otto; or, Up With Dead People Directed by Bruce LaBruce (2008) Let’s begin with the undead. Lara Glenum and the Montevideyo crowd (how’s that for a band name?) Sleeping Beauty Directed by Julia Leigh (2011) Blue Steel Directed by Kathryn Bigelow (1989) 15 Of The Most Confusing Films Ever Made. But some, some are designed to bewilder, obfuscate, and confuse.
These 15 films are all varying degrees of head-scratchers. Some you can pick apart with a bit of work, some you are deliberately impossible to understand, but all are worth the effort of the attempt. Oh yeah, spoilers. 15. While personally I didn't find this American remake of the Spanish psycho-thriller that bewildering, there were plenty who did, to the point where it was voted the most confusing film ever by a DVD rental company. 50 Anime You Must See. What is anime? Put simply it is Japan’s cartoon industry, and its range demonstrates how little Western animation has scratched the surface. Anime is not just for kids, but that doesn’t mean it’s brimming with sex and violence (although some undoubtedly has plenty of that). Anime is proof that any genre can be animated, from fantasy, to sci-fi, to crucially, everyday drama. And animation can capture nuance and emotion often lost in live action.
With the release onto Blu-ray of Evangelion 1.11 – You Are (Not) Alone we have collected 50 great anime you really have to see, and yep, Evangelion 1.11 is in there. One more thing - throughout this gallery you will encounter repeated references to OVA. Straight to DVD doesn't have the stigma of their Western counterparts and OVA frequently rival their big screen siblings.
