Both are massively underrated (not to mention misunderstood) but, given a chance, damn good. It’s weird that Mitchell remains so unknown today. He was actually pretty celebrated in the 40s, 50s and 60s, when he wrote profiles – super-detailed portraits – of all manner of eccentrics for the New Yorker. In fact, his colleagues admired his work so much that even when Mitchell stopped publishing thirty years before his death, no one asked him to vacate his office.
