So what exactly are these 'conventions' referred to in the Paper 2 Criterion C Format ? More precisely, what instructions do we give the students ... what plans do we provide them, so that they can construct something that will fly ? (2) We have noticed that there is three completely different kinds of divers. (3) We call them the "nature lovers", the "pool guys", and the "seals". (4) The people whom we call "nature lovers" enjoy getting in the water for a short swim to look at the rocks, seaweed and underwater creatures, which is swimming around. (5) The "pool guys", who wear the latest hi-tech equipment, comes for a short while to have a swim and test how good their equipments are. (6) The "seals", who wear only their swimsuits, dive in the water and disappear for what seem like hours. (7) Each of the divers enjoy the ocean in a different way. (13) The "pool guys" are the divers who want to go to the beach, or ocean without ever actually leaving their backyard. (14) They come in utility vehicles (SUVs), carrying heavy-duty wet suits, and the latest in diving masks, fins, and air tanks.

When discussing the register of a word, we refer to the use of language for a particular purpose or in a particular social setting, that is, its level of formality. The English language is no exception when it comes to language variation and style and it is important to recognise the differences and just as important to know the differences. Consider the table below and the grade differences ranging from very formal to casual in salutations and closures in both spoken and written discourse. An important feature of writing at university is its style and register. When referring to register in writing, the choices are usually 'familiar', 'informal', 'formal' and 'ceremonial'.
