Product Placement: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (Part 2) 2inShareinShare2Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the second installment of The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, the blog series that reminds us how ridiculously obvious modern product placement can be. Whether intentionally or not, it would appear as though the bright minds working in the film and television industries just can’t manage to weave believable occurrences of brand integration into their movies and shows. Think you can get through a few more instances without cringing? There’s only one way to find out for sure! Just to ease you back into it, we’ll start with… The Good Remember how 30 Rock kicked off the festivities in Part 1 of this series?

No doubt about it: it’s tough to top Tina Fey and the gang when it comes to tongue-in-cheek humor. 30 Rock is known for being a cut above most comedy shows, and cleverly self-referential moments like this are a big part of the reason why. The Bad Under normal circumstances, a mob boss playing Mario Kart is a recipe for success. The Ugly. Product Placement – Done Right and Done Wrong | utterlyorange. Product placement. It’s here to stay. It’s surprisingly effective when done well, eye-rollingly bad when done haphazardly, and flat-out offensive when done poorly. Here is my three-tiered breakdown of current product placement styles. Product Placement Done Well – Volkswagen In the movie Van Wilder, the star, Ryan Reynolds, is seen wearing a VW hat backwards. Of course, you could argue that the VW in both of these instances stands for Van Wilder, but we both know we’d only be fooling ourselves. In-Your-Face Product Placement – Pizza Hut/Subway These days, when the producer of content is afraid that its blatant product placement will alienate its audience, the company sometimes decides to go head-on.

Product Placement Done Like #@! I can’t tell which is more vomit-inducing: this ridiculous Chex Mix plug in “Days of Our Lives” or the pathetic attempt at acting. I really don’t care what the response is. Author: Eric Swenson Like this: Like Loading... How Product Placement Works" The Decline and Fall of Product Placement - Jonah Sachs. By Jonah Sachs | 11:00 AM February 22, 2013 For more than a century, the motion picture has reigned supreme as the world’s ultimate storytelling tool.

The sheer size of the “big screen,” Hollywood’s confidence that their product can hold audience attention for upwards of three hours, and budgets that run into the hundreds of millions, all proclaim the dominance of their art form. And the artists who tell stories? Filmmakers are gods, TV producers are wannabes, and ad execs are scum (a recent Ad Age survey put the advertising profession below politicians on the respectability scale).

So it’s no wonder that over the decades, advertisers have so eagerly turned to the tool of product placement when looking to associate their brands with a great story. Of course, these assumptions are becoming obsolete faster than most audiences or advertisers realize. How will this work? Brands will build “story-worlds,” not canned, thirty-second spots designed for broadcast. Realistic Product Placement" A worldwide trend in advertising, product placement is a vehicle for everything from foodstuffs to electronics to automobiles. So, how does it work, exactly? It's actually pretty simple. Basically, there are three ways product placement can occur: It simply happens. It's arranged, and a certain amount of the product serves as compensation. It's arranged, and there is financial compensation.

If the Shoe, Shirt, Car or Soda Fits... Sometimes product placement just happens. For illustrative purposes throughout the rest of this article, we can create a less controversial scenario. 10 Big Successes in Product Placement.
