Faculty-Led Programs During the three-week Kiplin Hall program, students attend lectures each morning and participate in field excursions in the afternoons. All Army Musicians (with the exception of Soldiers accepted in the Special bands) will attend Advanced Individual Training (AIT) after completing Army Basic Training. AIT is a 10 week intensive music performance course at the Army School of Music located on Joint Base Little Creek in Virginia Beach, VA.

With a highly skilled and specialized staff of musicians, the School of Music offers new Army musicians not only coaching and instruction in the specific skills of an Army musician, but mentoring in further preparation for life as a Soldier in the Army Bands. Students will work in small groups coached by staff members to prepare performances that are not only musically superb but are engaging to audience members. Additionally, students will learn basic military band marching techniques and movements. Weekly, students will meet individually with their instrumental instructor who will help them hone their skills in preparation for a series of auditions before graduating the course.

Auditions. Prospective musicians must pass an audition and be selected for a vacancy. Audition requirements are the same for Active Duty and Reserve/National Guard Bands. Please click on your instrument for audition requirements and information specific to your instrument. *Positions for these specialties are only available at the Special Army Bands. Scheduling Your Active Duty Audition If you are interested in becoming a member of the Active Duty Army Bands, you will have to audition and be selected for our program. Contact your local Army Music Liaison for a telephone interview by submitting an audition request. Scheduling Your Army Reserve/National Guard Audition If you are interested in becoming a member of an Army Reserve or National Guard Band, you will need to audition and be selected for a vacancy at that band.

Consider which Army Reserve or National Guard Band you would like to be a part of based on the proximity to your current location or the location of the school you plan to attend, etc. Guitar. As a guitar player in the US Army Bands, you will be expected to perform in many different styles and ensembles. You will perform in rock band, jazz band, jazz combo, and other popular music ensembles such as Latin/salsa band, or country band. All guitar players must be skilled and experienced in electric guitar as well as acoustic. Additionally, it is common for guitar players to supplement the percussion section when needed in concert band or during marching performances. Percussionists perform drum set in rock/pop band, jazz band, Latin/salsa band, and other popular music ensembles. Additionally, percussionists perform marching snare and bass drum in the ceremonial band and concert snare, mallets, and auxiliary percussion in the concert band.
