EdSurge LearnLaunch Tech for Schools Summit 2015 | EdSurge Summits. 60 Free Tools for Modern Storytellers. 20 new education products for tech-savvy students. The economics of both state-provided and private education are always making life difficult for those who spend their days balancing budgets. Schools don’t have a lot of money. Even the rich ones. We get that. The result is that, right across the industry, even in the private sector where the institution itself is dedicated to its own margins, there is a suspicion about suppliers who chase a profit. Margins are for other people, education is a vocation. This isn’t about the profit motive in private schools – that’s an issue that bears longer discussion than this piece – but about how those running schools, somehow, seem to live in a world where they assume that everyone – from those who drive the buses to those who make the lunches to those who make the apps that keep children educated even on their mobiles – are all doing it from higher motives.

Surely, the thought goes, no-one does this for the money, no-one would exploit the education of a child in that way? ConnectED Program Offers Schools Almost $2B in Products, Services. ATLANTA, GA--Close to $2 billion dollars in private company resources will flow into US schools through the ConnectED Initiative over the next three to four years. Ten companies shared the specifics around what they were offering (see list below) at the showcase event on Saturday, June 28, 2014, organized by the State Educational Technology Directors Association (SETDA).

Strategically placed during the overlap between the SETDA Emerging Technologies Forum, and the International Society for Technology Education (ISTE) annual conference, participants from both conferences could attend to discover what company resources were available to them and how they could be accessed. Representatives from the US Virgin Islands and from Guam applauded when they heard that the company resources shared were also available to all US territories.

(The one exception is Sprint because they do not have a presence in these regions.) President Obama's ConnectED initiative calls for Software Commitment: Commitment: ConnectED. Imagine K12 is an accelerator (or incubator) program exclusively for education technology companies focused on serving the kindergarten through high school education community. It was started in 2011 by three long-time entrepreneurs who were keen to contribute to education: Alan Louie, Tim Brady and Geoff Ralston. Every year, the incubator picks approximately 20 startups to "incubator," or help launch. The program prefers teams with technical cofounders. For its first four cohorts, the incubator offered startups modest cash (between $14K and $20K depending on the number of founders) and significant advice over an intense three-month period.

In return, startups gave Imagine K12 between 4% and 8% ownership of their organization. The operation was originally funded entirely by its founders. In early 2013, Alan Louie left the program to pursue other interests in education. In 2014, the program morphed: Imagine K12 announced it would accept up to 20 applications on a rolling basis.
