Those bright orange stickers attached to fresh produce can tell you more about the food than you think. The four to five digit labels, called Price Look-Up codes (PLUs), are used worldwide to help stores track inventory and scan prices at checkout. Some stores create their own “retailer assigned codes,” but most labels are the same across the board. You’ll spot them on items sold by weight or individually, like an apple or greens.

However, the labels aren’t just for grocers. Here’s a guide to reading the labels: All produce, including fruits, vegetables, dried fruit, herbs and nuts. These four-digit numbers run the gamut from guava to kiwi. This produce has five digit labels that start with the number 9. These five digit labels start with an 8, so a genetically engineered vine ripe tomato would be 84805. Business Insider. Bacteria in tap water can be traced to the water treatment process. (Phys.org) -- Most of the bacteria that remain in drinking water when it gets to the tap can be traced to filters used in the water treatment process, rather than to the aquifers or rivers where it originated, University of Michigan researchers discovered.

Their study—a unique, broad-based look at Ann Arbor's water supply from source to tap—could open the door to more sustainable water treatment processes that use fewer chemicals and, as a result, produce lower levels of byproducts that may pose health risks. Eventually, the work could enable engineers to control the types of microbes in drinking water to improve human health like "live and active cultures" in yogurt, the researchers say. The research, led by Lutgarde Raskin, a professor of civil and environmental engineering, is published online in Environmental Science & Technology and will appear in a forthcoming print edition. Most previous drinking water studies have focused more narrowly on disease-causing pathogens, Pinto said.

Electrifying success in raising antioxidant levels in sweet potatoes. Already ranked by some as number one in nutrition among all vegetables, the traditional sweet potato can be nutritionally supercharged ― literally ― with a simple, inexpensive electric current treatment that increases its content of healthful polyphenols or antioxidants by 60 percent, scientists said here today. Their report on the first electrical enhancement of sweet potatoes, a dietary staple since prehistoric times, was part of the 244th National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society, the world's largest scientific society.

The meeting, with 8,600 reports on new advances in science and a projected attendance of 14,000, continues through Thursday. "Many people don't realize it, but sweet potatoes are one of the world's most important food crops," said Kazunori Hironaka, Ph.D., who led the research team. The electric current apparently stresses the potatoes, and they produce more polyphenols as a protective measure. Other-juice-extractor-comparison-2007. Tasty. Raw Food For My Life. Hi, my name is Bill Barlow. I want to tell you the story of how I became 465 Lbs. and so unhealthy, why I founded Raw Food For My Life Inc. and created this website and at the same time changed my lifestyle to save my life. Back when I was a teenager and a young adult I was very active, played different sports, had a pretty good physique, was very strong and was in pretty good health at that time.

But after a period of time, after the age of thirty-five , I started to notice things going very badly and progressively worse. I started to notice that I was putting on weight that was not coming off with physical activities. I started to purchase larger cloths and at the same time joined different weight loss methods like, Nutrisystems, Weight Watchers, The Atkins Diet, South Beach, and even tried only eating cabbage soup all day. I became very discouraged with these methods because they were not working. Dan then instructed me to contact Dr. Seaweed toothpaste 'to stop tooth decay' 3 July 2012Last updated at 20:09 ET By Michelle Roberts Health editor, BBC News online The purple shows up the plaque on the half of the dentures that has not had the "seaweed" treatment Adding enzymes from seaweed microbes to toothpaste and mouthwash could provide better protection against tooth decay, a team of UK scientists have said.

Researchers at Newcastle University had been studying Bacillus licheniformis to see if it could clean ships' hulls. But the scientists now believe it could protect the areas between teeth where plaque can gather despite brushing. Their lab tests suggest the microbe's enzyme cuts through plaque, stripping it of bacteria that cause tooth decay. Dr Nick Jakubovics, of the university's school of dental sciences, said: "Plaque on your teeth is made up of bacteria which join together to colonise an area in a bid to push out any potential competitors.

"We found this enzyme can remove some of these undesirable bacteria from plaque. " Death of the gym workouts? 'Hulk' protein discovered by scientists that could be behind huge muscle growth. But doctor warns: 'Don't turn in your gym membership just yet' By Daily Mail Reporter Published: 16:13 GMT, 1 September 2012 | Updated: 16:40 GMT, 1 September 2012 If you hate the idea of working out in a gym to look toned and muscle-bound, then this could be the news you have been waiting for. Scientists in Australia believe they have found one of the molecular keys to a protein that promotes weight and muscle mass gain - without any exercise involved. Researchers have found that by blocking the function of Grb10 - nicknamed the 'Hulk' protein - while mice were in the womb, they were considerably stronger and more muscular at birth than normal mice. Mr Muscles: Getting toned like the Incredible Hulk will be a thing of the past if the protein discovered by scientists helps muscle growth in humans Grb10 seems to have a significant role in promoting muscle growth without any change in activity, diet, or adverse health effects, according to researchers.

Conut oil could combat tooth decay. 2 September 2012Last updated at 21:20 ET Coconut oil attacks the bacteria behind tooth decay and could be used in dental care products, according to research. Scientists found that coconut oil which had been treated with enzymes stopped the growth of Streptococcus bacteria - a major cause of tooth decay. Tooth decay affects 60% to 90% of children in industralised countries. Speaking at the Society for General Microbiology's conference, the Irish researchers say that coconut oil also attacks the yeast which causes thrush. The research team from the Athlone Institute of Technology in Ireland tested the impact of coconut oil, vegetable oil and olive oil in their natural states and when treated with enzymes, in a process similar to digestion. The oils were then tested against Streptococcus bacteria which are common inhabitants of the mouth. Only the enzyme-modified coconut oil showed an ability to inhibit the growth of most strains of the bacteria.

Eat the Sun - Hraniti se Suncem - aspekat duhovne hrane (serbian subtitle) “Eat the Sun”: Sun-worshiping fantasy versus reality. Almost exactly a year ago, I came across a bit of woo so incredible, so spectacularly stupid and unbelievable, that I dedicated one of the last segments I’ve done in a long time of Your Friday Dose of Woo to it.

Basically, it was about a movie called Eat the Sun, which described a bunch of people who believe that they can imbibe the energy they need to keep their bodies going by “sun gazing,” which involves, as the name implies, staring directly into the sun. The idea is to stare directly into the sun for as long as possible at sunrise or sunset, so as not to burn out your retinas by staring at the noon day sun. Sun gazers seem to think that mammals are like plants in possessing an ability to absorb energy directly from the sun.

We’re not, of course, as I explained in my inimitable way a year ago. Sun gazing also leaves out the fact that plants get the organic building blocks they use to produce their actual structures from the ground in which they grow. Humans have no such capacity. The man who says he hasn't eaten or drunk for 70 years: Why are eminent doctors taking him seriously? By Tom Rawstorne Updated: 00:11 GMT, 8 May 2010 There are few people, however busy their lives, unable to remember the last meal that they consumed. But Prahlad Jani is one of them. And the reason is that the last morsel of food that he says passed his lips did so in the early years of World War II. ‘I can’t recall exactly what it was,’ the 82-year-old Indian admits. ‘It was such a long time ago.’

During the 70-odd years since, Mr Jani says he has eaten not so much as a single grain of rice nor consumed a drop of water. Tests: 83-year-old Prahlad Jani has twice attended hospital to be watched round the clock by eminent doctors ‘Although I walk 100 or 200 kilometres in the jungle, I never sweat and don’t feel tired or sleepy,’ he says. No food? It is, of course, more than tempting to dismiss this Hindu holy man and his claims as the stuff of absolute nonsense. Practitioners of extreme starvation diets can cause serious damage to their bodies, leading to death.

Perhaps he’s right. America CLEANSE. Stanford researchers' cooling glove 'better than steroids' (Medical Xpress)—The temperature-regulation research of Stanford biologists H. Craig Heller and Dennis Grahn has led to a device that rapidly cools body temperature, greatly improves exercise recovery, and could help explain why muscles get tired. "Equal to or substantially better than steroids … and it's not illegal. " This is the sort of claim you see in spam email subject lines, not in discussions of mammalian thermoregulation.

Even the man making the statement, Stanford biology researcher Dennis Grahn, seems bemused. "We really stumbled on this by accident," he said. But for more than a decade now, Grahn and biology Professor H. The team is finally nearing a commercial version of their specialized heat extraction device, known as "the glove," and they've seen their share of media coverage. Have you ever heard anyone tell you to change up your greens and not always eat the same leafy greens day in and day out? Well if you have – it’s sound advice; let me explain why. Why Rotate Your Leafy Greens?

There are some obvious reasons we should eat a varied plant based diet. By eating a wide variety of leafy greens we ensure a wide range of vitamins and minerals boosting overall nutritional intake. Now onto the less obvious reason… Plants Inherent Defense Mechanism Mother Nature is very smart, you know. It’s obvious that there is a hierarchical food chain, and plants happen to be at the bottom of it. What Does This Mean For Us? All green leaves contain varying amounts of different phytotoxins; I’m sure you’ve heard of some of them – including oxalic acid, goitrogens and different alkaloids.
