Linux and Mac OS Are Fastest-Growing Operating Systems. Microsoft may still dominate the operating system market, but Linux and Apple's Mac OS platforms were the fastest-growing in 2010, according to new data from Gartner. Worldwide operating system revenue totaled $30.4 billion in 2010, Gartner reported Wednesday, representing an increase of 7.8 percent from 2009. Within that overall market, Microsoft still claims the leading position, with a 78.6 percent market share. What's particularly interesting, though, is the rapid growth being shown by both Linux and Macs in the server and client operating system segments, respectively.

On the client side, for instance--which as a whole grew 9.3 percent in 2010--Mac OS was the fastest-growing subsegment in 2010, even though Windows was still the largest client OS player. Microsoft's Windows client business, by comparison, grew by only 9.2 percent. "Apple's making of Mac OS as a 'cool' client computing OS has attracted a group of loyal customers on Mac devices and platforms," Gartner explained. A Better Way to Find & Install Windows & Linux Apps. In stark contrast to today’s heavily-financed mega-startups such as Facebook , Groupon or Color , consider the unassuming and newly profitable Ninite, maker of a bulk software installation tool for Windows and Linux. Ninite co-founders Patrick Swieskowski and Sascha Kuzins, the startup’s only employees, run a lean operation out of a San Francisco-based office and have no interest in raising flashy amounts of venture capital. Instead, their focus is on being the easiest way for software geeks, regular folks, grandmas and even system administrators to get software.

“The most frequent feedback we get from users is, ‘I love you,’” says Swieskowski. The primary reason for the user-love is that Ninite gives them the ability to install dozens of applications with just a few clicks — it strips out all the tedious navigation and unnecessary dialogs usually involved in the software installation process. “This is way software downloads should be,” Swieskowski says. Users seem to agree. Why Mac OS X Is Unsuitable For Web Development. Shutter as default | Shutter - Feature-rich Screenshot Tool. I seldom use the word ‘best’ when it comes to reviewing apps, but when it comes to Shutter, it really is the best screen capture tool that I have ever used in Linux. Shutter (previously known as Gscrot) is just like a swiss army knife for all your screen capture tasks in Linux. There are plenty of features packaged into the software: some allow you to perform screen capture easily and quickly, while others enable you to process the screenshots more efficiently. I am surprised that it even contains features that are not found in some commercial software. Screen Capture Ability In Shutter, there are plenty of options that you can use to capture screenshots.

Under each option, there are sub-options for you to choose from. Be it taking a snapshot of your screen, an application window or a web page, you will never run out of ways to capture the image. Five Best Linux Office Tools. The business office is where the Linux desktop should reign. Why? Linux is a reliable, stable, secure solution that would have any business user working day-in and day-out without fail. With an unheard of resistance to viruses, trojans, and worms, the office user enjoying the Linux desktop would have no concerns about down time as does the average Windows user. But what tools are there available for the usual office worker? Plenty! With a nod toward what the usual business day looks like, I have assembled what I think to be the five must-have office tools for the Linux desktop. With this collection of tools, most office workers could get the overwhelming majority of their work done.

You will find that many of these tools are not included with the average Linux desktop. Office Compatibility with LibreOffice I have to start with the most obvious tool first. Manage Money with GnuCash One of the most powerful features you will find in GnuCash is its reporting capabilities. Final Thoughts.
