Trans Etiquette 101: No Offense, But That’s Offensive. Brennan: [to Booth] You seem uncomfortable.

(Season 2, Episode 6, The Girl in Suite 2103) I am turning into a bit a of a “Bones” junkie. There is a lot of curiosity about people who are atypical. They are curious. Our invisibility in mainstream, culture, in classrooms, in discussions of history, in scientific exploration of sex and gender, and even in campaigns for “LGBT” rights has left us isolated and othered. An L.G.B.T. Movement Should Be More Radical - Room for Debate. The gay establishment has always taken “L.G.B.T.” to mean “gay, with lesbian in parentheses, throw out the bisexuals, and put trans on for a little bit of window dressing.”

An L.G.B.T. Movement Should Be More Radical - Room for Debate

But I’m not interested in trans inclusion in a gay movement narrowly focused on marriage and military inclusion, hate crime legislation, gentrification, consumerism and patriotism. The gay movement would like us to think that gay marriage will give everyone housing and health care; that openly gay soldiers pressing buttons in Nevada to obliterate Somali villages means homophobia is on the wane; that strengthening the criminal legal system through hate crime legislation will bring murdered queers back to life.

This is what we lose when we think of identity as an endpoint – just add “gay” (or even less acceptable terms like “queer” or “trans”) to any oppressive institution, and suddenly you have the new civil rights struggle. Real-Life Sophia Bursets: Transgender Women Face a Nightmare in Men’s Prisons.
