Word on the street

According to sources, the tech giant is actively working on adapting its popular software suite for Apple’s tablet. With the iPad making up over 80 percent of the tablet market and millions of people worldwide using Office, that could mean big bucks for the tech giant based in Redmond, Wash. In addition to an iPad-ready version, a new edition of Office is expected for OS X Lion sometime next year. The current version of the desktop package, Office 2011, officially supports iOS versions up to Snow Leopard. A Lion version, likely available via the Mac App Store, is widely expected.

It’s assumed that both of these would work with Office 365 as well as mobile versions, such as Windows Phone’s Office Hub. Microsoft already has numerous popular — and some not so popular — apps available for the iPad. Lessons Learned from a Google+ Page Suspension. Google+ Page Suspension Notice Google+ is still a new social channel, and consequently, there is a relative dearth of guidance on how to successfully navigate and stand out on the network.

Lessons Learned from a Google+ Page Suspension

Mistakes will happen, and in fact, may even be probable. I should know. You see, my employer’s Google+ Page — the one I created and continue to manage — was recently suspended, forcing me to dig deeper into Google+ and learn some of its nuances. That’s the bad news. Here then, are some trial-by-fire lessons that I hope prove useful: 1. Google+ Direct Connect accomplishes a couple of important things. Key takeaway: Take the time to send the proper signals to Google that your page is legitimate. 2. Almost immediately after Google+ launched Pages for brands, fake profiles — such as this Bank of America spoof– sprung up.

In response, Google pledged that it would monitor Google+, spot fake brand Pages, and suspend them until steps were completed to verify the authenticity of suspect Pages. That question is likely to become a hot topic over the next few years. Originally, we thought of PCs as the Apple II or then the IBM PC. They were machines that had to sit on a desk because, while significantly smaller than a mainframe, they were still big and bulky. They had large monitors, boxy bases, and big keyboards. We wrote about stealthy startup Personal earlier this year when the company announced $7.6 million in funding from Steve Case’s Revolution LLC, Allen&Company, and others.

Personal Is A Secure Vault For All Of Your Private, Digital Data

This week, Personal finally launched its service, which aims to give consumers control over their digital data, to the public. Personal is a free web and mobile service that helps you take control of all the digital information about yourself and your life, decide who gets access to it, and use it for your benefit. This information ranges from your passwords, your kids allergies, emergency contacts, credit card info, and more.

Basically, any information you may not want to store in email but want to be able to share with your loved ones or friends. With Personal you can store various information in ‘data vaults’ where you can selectively share certain vaults with people. For example, one way to use Personal is via its Form Killer app. At the very heart of Personal, are what the startup calls ‘gems.’ Never Fill Out a Form Again? Personal Seeks to Be the Data Vault for Your Private Information. Say hello to Personal, a startup that wants to be the private data vault for everything in your life, from your insurance to your dining preferences.

There are plenty of websites and social networks for sharing information publicly, argues founder Shane Green. We post a constant stream of information via Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Google and YouTube daily. But these social sites are not suited for the storage and transmission of private information. You need to refer to or share things such as your address, your allergies, your car insurance and your kids' health information for various reasons. Personal, which made its debut last week, aims to solve that problem by providing users the ability to store their data in things called "Gems". What's the point of filling out these Gems? Personal also has a feature called Community Gems. But Green hopes that Personal will become more than just a data vault; he wants it to also be a platform. The company also has some money in the bank.
