I am hugely honoured to have been invited here to speak to you today about the Future of Libraries in a Digital Britain – particularly since my credentials, meagre as they are, do not include a qualification in librarianship. Nor, as it happens, do they include the ability to see into the future. When we first posited the title of this talk, Digital Britain was riding high as a public policy agenda.
But things progress, to the point that I don’t think we’re talking about a ‘Digital Britain’ anymore. We’re talking about ‘Britain’ – a Britain that is culturally rich and complex, digitally literate and politically engaged. So, what might those needs look like?
