Jane Jacobs, Andy Warhol, and Eyes on the Street: Places: Design Observer

http://places.designobserver.com/feature/jane-jacobs-andy-warhol-and-the-kind-of-problem-a-community-is/25878/ Andy Warhol and Jane Jacobs both came to New York City from industrial cities in Pennsylvania — Jacobs from Scranton, Warhol from Pittsburgh. Yet the kinds of people they found and the social values they cultivated in New York could not have been more different; and their divergent perspectives point to notions of community that still resonate — and still conflict. Warhol’s apparent ideas about urban life undercut some of the ideals that Jacobs's books popularized, and they begin to suggest why those ideals have not found — and perhaps cannot find — greater traction in the contemporary city. Throughout 1961 — the year Random House published Jacobs's The Death and Life of Great American Cities — Warhol was experimenting with new styles of painting, a medium relatively new to him.

What are connected sustainable cities? Connected sustainable cities employ ubiquitous, networked intelligence to ensure the efficient and responsible use of the scarce resources – particularly energy and water – that are required for a city’s operation, together with the effective management of waste products that a city produces, such as carbon emissions to the atmosphere. http://www.connectedsustainablecities.org/

The Pop-Up City

In the last months, we lived through DARPA engaging MAKE Magazine and Otherlab to teach high school students how to “build robots, drones and other low- and medium-tech gadgets” and DARPA Director Regina Dugan (see this video about her work at DARPA) deciding to move to Google. Meanwhile the National Security Agency, USA, resurrected a world-domination-by-data-tracking programme called ‘Total Information Awareness’ and the Federal Government of USA announced extensive funding for big data research’ across fields like science, engineering, education, commerce and government. The USA government seems to have realised that physical surveillance (such as by drones) is rather suitable for low-digital terrains of Afghanistan (see Andrew Cockburn’s ‘Drones Baby Drones’ , sorry for LRB membership barrier), while ‘big data’ is the future of surveillance in networked societies of USA and elsewhere. http://popupcity.net/
I Wish This Was began in New Orleans in November 2010. It was inspired by vacant storefronts. There are a lot of them where Candy lives in New Orleans. There are also a lot of people who need things, including a full-service grocery store . What if we could easily voice what we want, where we want it? How can we influence the businesses and services in our neighborhoods?

I’m so happy to be selected as an Urban Innovation Challenge Fellow by Tulane University and the Rockefeller Foundation! The fellowship supports ideas to solve social challenges in areas of urban revitalization, public education, health, and economic development with a $45,000 stipend and generous support from Tulane University for the next year. With a mentorship from the great people at Tulane City Center , my colleagues and I will develop Neighborland which, in a nutshell, is the digital version of I Wish This Was and will help people shape future businesses and beyond in their neighborhoods. Neighborland is also very much a group effort with Head of Product Dan Parham , Chief Engineer Tee Parham , and vital help from James Reeves , Chris Palmatier, Alan Williams, and others.

City-User Interaction: Looking Beyond the Smartphone | John Geraci's Blog

Last night I did a video interview for a project Gabriel Weiner and Dana Karwas are putting together. As we were talking in between segments, Gabe and I got into an interesting discussion about smartphones and what’s next. The smartphone, and the location-based apps you put on them, seemed so incredibly cool and advanced when they first came out. For the first time ever you had a computer interface between you and the city, that went with you wherever you went and that could give you information about the things and people around you in the moment. That was mind-blowing, really.

Next American City » Buzz » Let’s Be Smart about Intelligent Cities

Last week, USA Today declared that “smart growth” is an outdated term, even as its principles remain accepted and practiced. “Intelligent cities” is the new urbanism buzzword. “Intelligent cities,” the new darling lingo of planners, reflects the times. It captures the essence of 21st-century technology that can help track when and how many people cross a street, water and energy consumption and peak hours at every transit stop.
