Which country has the most OpenStreetMap GPS Points? : Neis One! Some of you might already know that OpenStreetMap released a first bulk GPS point dataset last weekend. It contains almost 2.8 milliard (or for readers in the US 2.8 billion) points and is provided in its raw format, which means that only coordinate information is available for each point. Unfortunately it does not include any additional information or metadata. You can read more about it at the OSM Foundation Blog. The first idea that came to my mind was a simple comparison analysis to answer the following questions: Where are all those points located and which country has the most GPS points?
In a first try I conducted some results that showed that all points are distributed over 238 countries. For my analysis I used the OSM Mapnik world boundaries from the wiki. I think overall these are some quite interesting numbers. Foursquare : Abandon de Google Maps pour OpenStreetMap. Foursquare vient d’annoncer ce qu’il appelle un « petit changement » : il compte arrêter son partenariat avec Google Maps pour géolocaliser sur une carte les différentes Venues (entreprises) qu’il recense au profit d’une initiative open source appelée OpenStreetMap.
Pour cela, Foursquare a embauché les compétences d’une startup brillante, MapBox, qui a su exploiter correctement le projet OpenStreetMap en proposant une véritable alternative fiable à Google Maps. Foursquare explique ce changement de situation de plusieurs manières : L’API Google Maps est récemment devenue payante pour les sites tiers dépassant les 25 000 requêtes quotidiennes (comptez 4 et 10 dollars pour 1000 requêtes supplémentaires). Voilà donc une initiative intéressante de la part de Foursquare que de vouloir se dissocier de Google. Espérons en tout cas que cela démocratisera l’initiative open source dans son domaine, leadé majoritairement pas Google… On veut des véritables concurrents ! Via.
