About the author. Creative Thinking Exercises for Successful Groups. Creative thinking exercises suited for a historically successful group was the topic last week when I spoke to the Johnson County Sertoma.

Creative Thinking Exercises for Successful Groups

Thanks to an invitation from Marty Fahncke, president of the non-profit organization, it was an opportunity to speak with them as they consider a significant new service project and fund raising strategies to support it. The inspiration for the presentation came from “Words of Inspiration” on the Sertoma website. Five words in particular tie directly to important creative thinking concepts: 1. Enthusiasm Enthusiasm for ideas – lots of ideas – is central to generating possibilities that create breakthrough results. 2.

Many Johnson County Sertoma projects involve children, especially a fantasy sports camp for hearing-impaired kids. 3. The fact “brain” was one of the inspiration words was exciting for me! 4. As a service-based organization, Johnson County Sertoma is all about helping others. 5. Granting Permission. I’m thinking about the notion of strategic resilience.

Granting Permission

In the face of growing unpredictability, how do we provide ourselves with appropriate options for the future? How do we leverage the increasing interconnectedness of our markets without becoming victims of those connections? Singular, one-dimensional strategy is now outdated and risky. From a biological perspective, resilience means having multiple options for survival. The HBR Agenda 2011. Creative Idea Implementation Plan. (Version 1.0) by Jeffrey Baumgartner There are a number of reasons why creative ideas fail to become innovations.

Creative Idea Implementation Plan

Sometimes it is because the idea, which seems brilliant in concept, is flawed in application. More often, the problem is that organizations invest in creative ideation initiatives (often called “innovation initiatives”), such as brainstorming events, idea management, ideas campaigns and the like, but fail to invest in implementing the most creative ideas that come from those initiatives.

Indeed, you have probably experienced this typical scenario: a company invests in generating ideas via brainstorming events that involve a lot of highly paid managers and researchers. There are many reasons why creative ideas are killed, however, almost all of them have to do with risk. Unwillingness to implement creative ideas is not only a weakness with companies, individuals have the same problem.

The Idea Before you implement your idea, you need to describe it in detail. Benefits and Risks. Interview: Tim Brown of IDEO on 'Design Thinking' “The problem with design,” declared IDEO president Tim Brown at a lecture in Singapore recently, “is that it got small.”

Interview: Tim Brown of IDEO on 'Design Thinking'

He is speaking about ‘design thinking’, a philosophy that aspires to make design ‘big’ again. Before his talk, I sat down with Brown to find out more about his beliefs as a designer and innovator. The Palo Alto-based IDEO is one of the largest ‘design consultancies’ around, with offices in Chicago, London, Shanghai and other top cities. Among its leaders include David Kelley, Stanford professor who helms the d.school, and Bill Moggridge, inventor of the world’s first laptop computer. Voted by Bloomberg BusinessWeek as one of the top 25 most innovative companies in 2006, the firm, amazingly, does consulting work for the other 24. IDEO isn’t your normal design studio. Design nations. I am off to Singapore in a week for my first visit.

Design nations

I have been invited by the government to give a talk on design thinking and meet with various government and business leaders to talk about the role of design thinking at a national level. It is interesting to think about national scale design and innovation policy and the person who I believe has done most with this is John Kao with his I20 group of 25 national innovation leaders. There seems to be a group of small to medium size countries that are committed to building innovation infrastructure to drive economic growth and I wonder what are the key elements for success in this endeavor?

Finland is a great example of a country that has done many of the right things. It has an integrated design and innovation policy and has created new institutions like Aalto University to facilitate greater cross-disciplinary collaboration. How will the western concept of brand mutate to serve Asian markets?
