Celik - Teaching English Intonation to EFL/ESL Students. The Internet TESL Journal Mehmet Celikmcelik [at] hacettepe.edu.trHacettepe University, Turkey This article proposes a workable, teachable, generalisable as well as communicatively efficient framework for the teaching of the intonation of English to non-native speakers of English. It is proposed that a framework of English intonation should include four major intonational features: intonation units, stress, tones, and pitch range. Consequently, the phenomena of intonation in English should have a piece of utterance, intonation unit, as its basis to study all kinds of voice movements and features. Every intonation unit has a type of tonic stress: (unmarked) utterance-final tonic stress, or emphatic, or contrastive, or new information stress, the last of which is more frequently used in utterances given to wh-questions.

Further, intonation units have typically one of these tones; fall, low-rise, high-rise, and fall-rise. Introduction Intonation Units Stress Tonic Stress Emphatic Stress i. Tone. Undefined Teaching Pronunciation in the Learner-Centered Classroom Hsiang-Pao Lin, Chuen-Yn Fan, and Chi-Fen Chen This paper will present specific tools and techniques to help students overcome problems with English pronunciation. Ways to resolve the various problems, such as missing final consonants, misplaced stress in sentences, and misused intonation patterns, will be discussed in the three areas of pronunciation: sounds, stress & rhythm, and intonation.

Activities related to the correction of these errors are designed to meet students' different learning styles, namely auditory, visual, tactile, and kinesthetic learning. In this way, the goal of the “learner-centered” classroom is hoped to be pragmatically achieved. 1.
