Within the last few years, we’ve been stretched quite thin when it comes to budgetary matters, and very few sectors of our economy have witnessed as dramatic a cut in services as our schools. With this in mind, I’ve made the decision to put my greediness aside, and offer some help instead. In 2004, I wrote and illustrated WordPlay Café (Williamson Publishing, an Ideals company). It’s a fun, educational romp through the more common aspects of linguistics for kids, and was driven by my desire to not only present the humor in wordplay, but also explain how it works, so that kids may begin to build their own unique brand of phonetic fun.
Here’s the deal. Below you will find links to the book as chapter-by-chapter PDF files. All I ask in return is that the files remain in the classroom and be treated in a scholarly manner. Teach. A student answer sheet for students to record their answers is included along with an answer key for self-checking. There is also a Challenge Card that can be used in conjunction with any other card to extend the activity. These task cards are perfect for test prep and will work well at literacy centers, stations, for partner work, or with the whole class using a game like Scoot. These cards will look best in color, but will also print out fine in grayscale. Simply print and cut along the guidelines. Aligned with Common Core Standard L.5 for grades 4,5, and 6: Demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings.

Then they brainstormed about what MY secret life might be, and created circle maps to include any ideas they had. Then they created a flow map to create their "secret life" story. This is by far the most popular center in my classroom. It is never a management problem. My students could stay there all day. The only problem I have is that the kids are singing a little too loud. For this center, you need the individual CD players. At this center, the kids choose the Big Book they want to listen to and put the CD in the player.
