#SMECom Presentation | Seeing Social. For the past three months, I have been working on a team teaching project called “Social Media E-Commerce,” or #SMECom. The project has fascinated me, as I learned about the Want button, Tango Card, and F-Commerce. To learn more about each of these three points, I encourage you to check out my group’s Slideshare presentation on #SMECom: After viewing the presentation, it becomes apparent that the amount of social media commerce that already exists is overwhelming.

Companies are trying to reinvent the term “E-commerce” to satisfy customers, who are not always as trustworthy as they seem. To compile this presentation, my group used a variety of social tools. We also used Pearltrees to curate material. Overall, the use of social media tools, including Google Docs and Pearltrees, helped us build a successful and one-of-a-kind presentation that was built on collaboration and curation. Is Pinterest The Next Social Commerce Game Changer? #Infographic. New “Listen” Button On Facebook Musician Pages Instantly Plays Their Songs In Your Favorite Streaming App. Today Facebook co-opts the best thing about Myspace pages — rapid music discovery — by prominently adding a “Listen” button to musician Pages right next to the Like button. When clicked, the artist’s jams will start to play in your most frequently used Facebook music streaming app such as Spotify or MOG.

If you haven’t authenticated any music apps, Facebook will prompt you to set up the one that’s most popular with your friends, or around the world. Now with just a single click of an immediately visible button, visitors to Facebook Pages can sample an musician’s sound and decide if they want to “Like” them. The button will help artists get more people to fall in love with their recorded music, and while streaming royalties are small, it could get inspire people to buy high margin t-shirts and concert tickets.

The Listen button has just been rolled out to all musician Pages (try it here on Radiohead’s Page), but will only be available from the web for now. Re: @GStephanopoulos | Old Spice. Seeing Social | a peak at social media. Oh My Goodness. The Facebook Timeline of Social Commerce [Infographic] Selling on Facebook works—for some. Over the past few months such high-profile retailers as GameStop Corp., J.C. Penney Co. Inc. and Gap Inc. have shuttered their Facebook storefronts. But many smaller retailers’ Facebook stores are prospering, according to a new data from social commerce vendors Ecwid Inc. and Payvment.

That might explain why 16% of retailers enable shoppers to buy directly on Facebook, according to the E-Tailing Group’s 14th Annual Mystery Shopping Study. Ecwid says that the average revenue of the roughly 35,000 Facebook storefronts it powers increased about 40% in 2011 compared with 2010. “F-commerce is not only alive and well, it is growing,” says Ruslan Fazlyev, CEO and founder of Ecwid, using the marketing term for Facebook commerce. The challenge, for small- and medium-sized businesses, is getting shoppers to find their stores on the social network. Those Facebook ads are extremely effective, which is why 70% of merchants that have used them in the past plan to do so again, says the survey.

Yahoo Meme Is Closing Down in May. Yahoo Meme, a Twitter-like service that was a failed attempt to get Yahoo into social, is closing down on May 25th according to a “meme” on the site itself. Specifically, the site allowed users to share pictures, videos and status updates with friends. They also emphasized the sharing of music as MP3 files — this made the site something of a Twitter-MySpace fusion. The site first debuted in May of 2009, and was launched first for just the Portuguese market. It may have had a chance, but I suspect a lack of clarity kept it out of users’ hands; it seems like people were getting their media rich sharing fill from Tumblr. Why Facebook commerce is alive and well. Some have questioned the effectiveness of Facebook as a commerce platform, but can you dismiss an ad and marketing channel with 800+ million users?

Here are some tips for increasing the opportunities for commerce on Facebook. Recently, Bloomberg published an article about several retailers, J.C. Penney, Nordstrom, Gap and Gamestop, who all closed their Facebook stores in 2011. As a consultant implementing s-commerce (Social Commerce) solutions for my clients, I am writing to let you know that Facebook commerce (f-commerce) is alive and well and customers are making money selling products and services via Facebook. I can’t speak about the f-commerce implementations of the aforementioned companies, only from my own experience.

For one company, Grassroots Festival, we created a Facebook store to sell discounted tickets on the festival’s Facebook fan page. We have also seen considerable success with smaller clients who do not currently sell their products online. It’s Facebook. Congressman Uses Facebook To Air Travelers’ Gripes. Republican Congressman Darrell Issa of California gave travelers a chance to air their complaints against the Transportation Security Administration using stories posted to Facebook.

Issa, chairman of the House Oversight and Government Affairs Committee, solicited travelers’ stories via Facebook, and TSA officials were in the uncomfortable position of having to respond to the complaints at a committee hearing Monday. While more than 350 comments were submitted directly to the pages of the committee and the Issa page over the weekend alone, four stories were selected and read aloud by the California congressman. Justin LoFranco, deputy director of digital strategies for the Oversight and Government Reform Committee, said that on Friday, committee members each began posting to their own Facebook pages and the committee’s, asking for travelers’ complaints.

LoFranco was pleased with the strong response on Facebook over a single weekend. LoFranco said: Trying Out Pearltrees | Seeing Social. In my social media class, we received a visit from Oliver Starr, Chief Evangelist for Pearltrees. Pearltrees is a unique social networking site that allows you to turn bookmarking into an interactive and connective activity. Here is my NewhouseSM4 pearltree (my class pearltree): Each bookmark becomes a pearl that is movable and organizable in any way you like.

Today, we made a pearltree for The Hunger Games and watched pearling happen in real time. Doing so allowed us to view the potential for this new and interactive tool. Instead of bookmarking to keep track of sites you need to remember, pearling allows you to sort through and organize your content, as well as the content of those with similar interests. If you try out Pearltrees, definitely try out the search feature. Pearl responsibly! Like this: Like Loading...

The Hunger Games. The Hunger Games. Copyright Issues Could Spur Changes To Pinterest’s Terms Of Use And ‘Pin Etiquette’ Pinterest, the hugely popular website that lets people share photos and images on a virtual pinboard, has had trouble brewing for a while over what some people say are frequent copyright violations that happen when users ‘pin’ photos on the site without permission. But one woman recently discovered that the copyright issue at Pinterest is a little more complicated than that: Pinterest’s own rules of etiquette make it very difficult for regular people to use the site at all without being liable in the event of a copyright lawsuit. Kirsten Kowalski blew the whistle on this issue in a blog post that went viral late last month. Kowalski, who lives in Alpharetta, Georgia, is a triple-threat of sorts: A professional photographer at DDK Portraits, a corporate lawyer, and a passionate Pinterest user. Once she looked deeper into this contradiction, Kowalski made the difficult decision to delete all the Pinterest boards she had made that used photos taken by other people.

But the site’s legacy will be reinventing photo curation, so much so that the social photo sharing website Flickr is following Pinterest’s lead. I’ve heard from clients, though, that they just don’t see Pinterest hitting their market. They’re probably right.
