Prism Skylabs Refocuses Security Cams Into Productive Video Assets. Prism SkyLabs was able to draw media attention before it was even launched thanks to buzz among angel investors (including TechCrunch founder Michael Arrington). When we last reported on Prism, we only knew that the startup planned to ‘bring physical spaces online.’ But the startup, which is debuting today at TechCrunch Disrupt, does so much more, and may be a killer new tool for any merchant or business who has a consumer storefront. Simply put, Prism Skylabs is a cloud-based service thats allow business owners to bring video feeds online, capture images from these feeds and share this data with consumers and the public. Most stores and restaurants have surveillance videos running 24-hours a day. That’s where Prism Skylabs comes in. Why would businesses want these images? More over, users can compare web analytics, social media traffic and more with traffic documented by the video images.

These are all questions that can be answered with Verint's Nextiva Retail Traffic Analytics. Nextiva Retail Traffic Analytics is designed to help retailers make operational decisions based on hard data and validate assumptions for key in-store marketing, product placement, and advertising decisions. “Path intelligence,” indeed « Adam Greenfield's Speedbird. I want you to go take a look at this Times Online piece, which comes my way via Chris Heathcote’s del.icio.us. (If you’re in a hurry, the gist of it is that a UK-based company called Path Intelligence is using mobile-phone microtriangulation to pinpoint customer behavior inside malls.) I cannot imagine a better-timed demonstration of so many of the facets of so-called “reality mining” that concern me. The utility of gathering this information is clear, at least from the perspective of a retail establishment: A shopping mall could, for example, find out that 10,000 people were still in the store at 6pm, helping to make a case for longer opening hours, or that a majority of customers who visited Gap also went to [competitor] Next, which could useful for marketing purposes.

In this case, information gathered from you without your knowledge (let alone your consent) is being used to build models of behavior from which real financial value can be derived.
