De recorder heeft een paar problemen, sommigen zijn door mij zelf op te lossen, maar bij anderen heb ik wat hulp nodig hier. Wanneer je de recorder aan zet, gebeurt het volgende ( Filmpje van iemand anders ) : Apart daarvan, zijn er ook nog wat serieuzere problemen. Bepaalde schakelaars zijn vies en zorgen voor gekraak op het rechter kanaal als ze niet corigeert worden ( door een beetje gerommel ). Als laatste is er wat mis gegaan toen ik het koppenklepje demonteerde, geen schade, gelukkig.
De klep die over de bediening heen gaat was ook afgebroken, maar doordat alle onderdelen er nog bij waren, heb ik deze kunnen restaureren met epoxy, werkt perfect en ziet er ook perfect uit! Tussen de jaren 60 tot midden jaren 80 heeft dit merk vele tapedecks uitgebracht. Van eenvoudig (DS 4000) tot ware kunstwerken (GX-747). Sommige modellen zijn zo gewild dat er door verzamelaars flink voor betaald wordt. Zelf heb ik een paar Akai recorders in mijn verzameling. Akai 4000 DS MKII (1978) In zijn tijd het instapmodel tapedeck, redelijk betaalbaar (799 gulden) en ook ook best een aardig tapedeck. Akai GX-635D takedown procedure and a question... I had a little trepidation looking at the front panel, because there is a LOT of stuff to deal with, but taken in stages it was no problem... OK, first the knobs and head cover.... All the knobs (red arrows) pull straight off with gentle traction, except the Timer/Lock knob. This will require a small Allen wrench for the set screw on the shaft. Also, the Rec level nested knobs are a two out of three deal in that the bottom collar stays put until the bottom face plate comes off. The outer head cover comes off next by undoing the larger hex bolts, and by taking the pinch roller cover off. The head cover base is next, and it comes off by unscrewing the two Phillips head screws on the top portion, the two hex bolts on the lower portion, and by removing the pinch roller. Anyway, all these parts are obvious, because the head cover base is a solid piece of grey plastic, and the connectors are all very evident.

Launched a year before Akai's last open-reel development (the GX-625, 1979), the GX-635 and GX-635D were the base for the few later high-end open-reel recorders. The GX-636, GX-646 and GX-747 all drew on the same design, the same GX heads, the same SCM-200 and XO-24TD motors and the same features. And all were very successful : in that price range and timeframe perhaps only the Teac X-1000 series sold as well. If evolving from the "small" GX-266II (layout, motors, features), the GX-635 has a completely different system for the tension tape guides which are activated by a micro-switch and are enclosed in a Star Wars-ish cover alongwith the 6 heads and pinch roller. The capstan is a frequency-controlled AC servo DD motor ; the reels are spun by AC eddy current outer rotor DD motors. Akai GX-635 D Parts.
