Chimaericon. Domestic sheep. Sheep (Ovis aries) are quadrupedal, ruminant mammals typically kept as livestock. Like all ruminants, sheep are members of the order Artiodactyla, the even-toed ungulates. Although the name "sheep" applies to many species in the genus Ovis, in everyday usage it almost always refers to Ovis aries. Numbering a little over one billion, domestic sheep are also the most numerous species of sheep. An adult female sheep is referred to as a ewe (/juː/), an intact male as a ram or occasionally a tup, a castrated male as a wether, and a younger sheep as a lamb. Sheep husbandry is practised throughout the majority of the inhabited world, and has been fundamental to many civilizations. Sheepraising has a large lexicon of unique terms which vary considerably by region and dialect. Description and evolution A sheep's skull Another trait unique to domestic sheep as compared to wild ovines is their wide variation in color.

Our approach is profoundly multidisciplinary, bridging the sciences and the humanities. Our teaching is led by research and practice. The breadth and depth of staff expertise informs an approach that combines formal, up-to-date instruction with extensive hands-on experience in the laboratory and in fieldwork. The work placement, a one-year professional training scheme, which has run successfully for over 25 years, adds tremendously to student experience and employability. Our students were 100% satisfied overall with archaeology courses at Bradford in the National Student Survey 2015. Why study Archaeology at Bradford? Dr Chris Gaffney explains what Bradford has to offer to prospective archaeology students.
