Much of the list was subsequently published in 2005 as The Counter-Creationism Handbook .It is extremely seldom that one has the opportunity to think a new thought about a familiar subject, let alone an original thought on a contested subject, so when I had a moment of eureka a few nights ago, my very first instinct was to distrust my very first instinct. To phrase it briefly, I was watching the astonishing TV series Planet Earth (which, by the way, contains photography of the natural world of a sort that redefines the art) and had come to the segment that deals with life underground. The subterranean caverns and rivers of our world are one of the last unexplored frontiers, and the sheer extent of the discoveries, in Mexico and Indonesia particularly, is quite enough to stagger the mind. Various creatures were found doing their thing far away from the light, and as they were caught by the camera, I noticed—in particular of the salamanders—that they had typical faces. In other words, they had mouths and muzzles and eyes arranged in the same way as most animals.

One of the cornerstones in the crumbling foundation of creationist "science" is the notion that evolution contradicts the second law of thermodynamics. The classical version of this law may be stated as follows: The entropy of an isolated system can never decrease . (An isolated system is one that does not exchange energy or matter with its surroundings.) Creationists originally argued that a decrease in entropy is exactly what evolution requires, hence the conflict with the second law.

An example of a creationist claim is that there is a lack of support for evolution among scientists . This claim has for example been articulated, "Interestingly, ever since Charles Darwin 's book The Origin of Species was published in 1859, various aspects of the theory have been a matter of considerable disagreement even among top evolutionary scientists." [1] To counter this claim one need only note that scientists' disagreements are about details over the way that evolution functions - and not about the historical fact of it. Ancient images that creationists claim are evidence of humans living alongside dinosaurs are at best just smeared pictures, scientists find. At the site of Kachina Bridge in Utah — an immense sandstone formation resembling an arch more than 200 feet (60 meters) high and wide that was formed by the undercutting of a rock wall by flowing water — prehistoric cultures decorated the walls with paintings and engravings known as petroglyphs. Intelligent design ( ID ) is the proposition that "certain features of the universe and of living things are best explained by an intelligent cause, not an undirected process such as natural selection ." Specified complexity is an argument proposed by William Dembski and used by him and others to promote intelligent design . According to Dembski, the concept is intended to formalize a property that singles out patterns that are both specified and complex , in specific senses defined by Dembski.
